PALMYRA, VA – Fluvanna County Public Schools (FCPS) has announced that Carson Raines, a senior at Fluvanna County High School (FCHS), has been awarded one of the two full-tuition scholarships from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for the upcoming academic year. This highly competitive scholarship recognizes Raines’s exceptional academic performance, leadership, and dedication to service.
Now in its 10th year, Pitt-Greenburg’s full-tuition scholarship competition awards up to three scholarships annually, each valued at more than $54,000. The scholarship covers in-state tuition at the university’s Hempflied Township, PA, campus for up to four years, contingent upon maintaining a 3.5 GPA each academic year.
Raines, who holds an impressive 4.5 GPA, has excelled academically while taking a rigorous course load through the Blue Ridge Virginia Governor’s School, including advanced placement and dual enrollment classes. His academic commitment has prepared him well for the challenges of higher education.
Beyond the classroom, Raines is a standout athlete and leader. A four-year varsity baseball player, he plans to join Pitt-Greensburg’s baseball team as a catcher. He has also been actively involved in student organizations such as the National Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Fluco Club, where he served as the Baseball Team Representative.
Raines’s dedication to community service is equally noteworthy. He has volunteered with the SPCA and contributed to local initiatives such as the Diverse Community Improvement Initiative, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting and uplifting his community.
“Carson Raines embodies the qualities of a true leader and scholar,” said Victoria J. Zavadsky, English teacher at FCHS. “His ability to balance academics, athletics, and community service is a testament to his character and work ethic.”
Raines plans to pursue a degree in business at Pitt-Greensburg, with aspirations of serving in leadership roles that emphasize character, empathy, and integrity in an increasingly automated world.
This year’s scholarship recipients were selected based on application materials and interviews with the university’s selection committee. Thirty-six applicants and ten finalists participated in the competition.
FCPS congratulates Carson Raines on this outstanding achievement and looks forward to his continued success.
