According to NBC News, a massive snowstorm stretching across the West Coast to the Upper East Coast is expected to hit Central Virginia Jan. 24-26. As of Jan. 22, Fluvanna has initiated plans for two days of remote learning in anticipation of one or more district snow days next week.
FCPS Superintendent Dr. Peter Gretz sent an email to parents and Fluco families on Jan. 22, noting the following:
In anticipation of possible inclement weather next week, we are planning ahead to minimize the impact of any school closures on our instructional calendar and student learning.
Our school calendar is designed to meet the instructional needs of students and staff while complying with Virginia state requirements of a minimum of 180 teaching days or 990 instructional hours per school year. To ensure we maintain sufficient instructional time and continue supporting student learning, we are preparing for the possibility of two remote learning days next week. Virginia school divisions are permitted to use up to ten remote learning days for emergency or weather-related closures. In the event of school closure(s) we will communicate if the day is designated as remote learning.
While remote learning cannot fully replace in-person instruction, it helps maintain continuity of learning during school closures. Assignments will focus on reinforcing skills and reviewing previously taught material. These materials will be provided to students on Friday this week and may include printed resources, Google Classroom assignments, and other FCPS-approved learning platforms. Virtual teaching will not occur during remote learning days; however, staff will be available to respond to emails and provide support during office hours from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on remote learning days. Student attendance on remote learning days will be determined using assignment completion. Student work will be due by the third day of return to school unless a student’s IEP, 504, or LIEP plan allows for additional time.
In accordance with these plans, FCHS teachers are preparing packets for students take home on Jan. 23. Fluvanna had four snow days during the fall semester, something which is above the norm of one or two fall school closures due to inclement weather.
The school Cafeteria will also be providing food for students to take home in preparation for remote learning. At the beginning of 4th block class on Jan. 23, students who would like meals to take home should check in with their teacher and then report to the Cafeteria at 2:30 p.m.
