Every year, seniors in Blue Ridge Virginia Governor’s School (BRVGS) must do a senior capstone project, including 10 or more hours of professional learning experience in addition to 10 or more hours toward a community service initiative. Senior at FCHS and founder of Project Second Chance, Lent Maqani, has chosen to do his internship at the Fluvanna County Attorney’s Office. During his internship, he witnessed how the justice system affects families, resulting in the development of Project Second Chance.
Maqani said that Project Second Chance is a student-led holiday initiative created to support children whose parents are incarcerated or enduring major hardship. This program provides clothes, gifts, holiday meals, and other things for families in need.
“Project Second Chance represents more than a holiday drive; it serves as a movement toward restoration and second chances. Every contribution becomes an essential component of a chain of kindness that encourages the next generation and redefines what community support looks like,” said Maqani.
Beyond simply meeting physical needs, the organization works to remind every child that their efforts matter, are deeply valued, and can lead to brighter futures. Project Second Chance operates through a coordinated process to ensure children and families in need receive meaningful support. Families are identified in collaboration with local organizations and community contacts, and donations are collected through GoFundMe and local drives at churches and businesses. Using the funds and donated items, volunteers purchase and wrap gifts, meals, and clothing.
A “Wrapping and Giving Day” event will be held where families will be given their items, creating a personal connection and reinforcing the program’s mission of hope and second chances.
The program’s goal is to raise an estimated total of $5,000, and the deadline will most likely be around Dec. 15–20. Recently, there was the “In The Name Of Shod“ drive, and more than 300 hygiene items were donated.
“With help from Mrs. Jessica Lavin and my fellow mentors at the Fluvanna County Attorney’s Office, Jeff Haislip, Amanda Galloway, and Kirby Baughn, in addition to every individual that has helped me slightly, I believe we can make a great lasting change in Fluvanna County. Project Second Chance will plan to expand to other individuals and profits in support,” said Maqani.
