Inquiry into the death of a teen’s body found in rapper D4vd’s Tesla continues to remain shrouded in mystery while intriguing the singer’s fans. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed with local news station KTLA on Nov. 6 that no additional criminal charges have been substantiated in the investigation. That could change, however, as on Nov. 19, police told NBC4 Investigates that D4vd has been identified as a suspect in the death.
D4vd, legally known as David Anothony Burke, had an unclear relationship with the deceased, who has been identified as 15-year-old runaway Celeste Riveras Hernandez. Her decomposed remains were found in the trunk of D4vd’s Tesla on Sept. 8.
The cause of Hernandez’s death remains undetermined, and Burke has not been charged with any crimes. The singer has not released a public statement. Still, his spokesperson has disclosed that he is “fully cooperating with authorities,” and has hired a criminal defense attorney who has represented celebrities such as Mel Gibson, Lindsay Lohan, Kanye West, Britney Spears, and Harvey Weinstein, a former Hollywood movie producer who is currently serving time in prison for sex crimes.
Despite the claims of D4vd’s lawyer, on Nov. 19, NBC4 Investigates published the following: “The LAPD source with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBC4 Investigates that the Houston-artist has not been cooperative in the investigation.”
The LAPD has not offered many details in the case or the probe, calling it an open death investigation. However, some evidence potentially tying Burke to the case has been discovered. A tattoo on Burke’s right index finger reading “Shhh…” matches one found on Hernandez’s body. Old Discord messages and family members of the victim have mentioned that she had been dating an adult man, while an unreleased song of D4vd’s labeled “Celeste” is suspected by some to be suggestive of Hernandez’s murder. Fans, true-crime enthusiasts, and internet sleuths have launched their own inquiries into the case, highlighting that many of Burke’s song lyrics mention committing murder or crimes that many believe align with the allegations against him.
Burke has amassed millions of fans worldwide, including many students at FCHS, some of whom have expressed their interest in the case.
“I never really listened to his music, but it’s horrific and weird knowing his lyrics were basically a confession about his crimes,” said sophomore Charlotte Gifford.
According to the BBC, D4vd’s ascent to fame and his world tour were cancelled within days of the discovery of the body. Some say they are shocked and disturbed by the ongoing crime case.
“I used to love D4vd, but after reading about the crime, I will never be able to hear his music the same again,” said Freshman Levi Smith.
