On October 28, FCHS held its annual Breast Cancer Walk to raise awareness for breast cancer. Over 600 students and staff members went to the track to walk, have fun, and celebrate breast cancer survivors, while raising money for local breast cancer awareness charities.
Future Culinary Leaders of America (FCLA) sold items like snow cones, lemonade, and pretzels at the walk, while Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members saw weeks of their efforts planning and sponsoring the event come to fruition.
“I am particularly proud of the FBLA members. They really took charge of the event and even came up with more fundraising ideas than in the past,” said FBLA Co-Sponsor Tonya Vowels. The walk is named after her aunt, former FCHS Business teacher Harriet Parrish, who passed away after a long battle with breast cancer.
“We had a representative from the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation attend, and she took a picture with the kids and one of those big, fake checks. It was the first time we ever had one of the charities attend. The FBLA students loved seeing the big check,” said FBLA Co-Sponsor Christine Kreitzman.
Numerous students and staff worked to make the walk a success, which included raising nearly $1,400 from ticket sales and donations. Money raised from ticket sales and donations will go to the Alyssa House at UVA and the Virginia Breast Cancer Fund. Funds raised from food sold by FCLA will go to support programs of the FCHS Culinary classes.
