For many girls, finding “the dress” is their favorite part of Homecoming. Shopping for dresses and trying to choose between puffy, sparkly, or satin with friends or family is a highlight of many a teen’s school year.
Homecoming dress trends over the past few years at FCHS have often been at least somewhat inspired by the dance theme, whether that be “A Night In Athens,” “Hey Hollywood,” or this year’s “Rhythm in Rio” dance on Oct. 25. Not all girls choose to dress along the lines of the theme, but sparkly dresses seem to be an ongoing trend as they make the wearer stand out.
Popular styles for 2025 appear to be A-line dresses, asymmetrical necklines, V-necks, off-the-shoulder, high slits, and open backs. Sheri Hill dresses are also popular, featuring flowy, sleek, flouncy, and flared dress styles.
This year, you can expect to see more cottagecore dresses. These come in floral prints and light colors such as green, blue, and white. Lace dresses in multiple colors will likely also be popular this year, offering a sleek, patterned look.
Shoes are also an important part of Homecoming outfits. “Heels are for pictures,” said senior Carson Johnston, who admits that she immediately changes into Birkenstocks after photos at dances.
Other students go barefoot at the dance quickly, but another option is to wear sneakers to Homecoming. Currently trending “dance-worthy” sneakers include the classic all white or black and white, usually in brands like Nike, New Balance, and Adidas.
For those willing to put up with the discomfort of heels, this year’s trend is kitten heels, which provide a short heel that is easier to dance and walk in. Block heels are another alternative to stiletto heels.
Popular websites for Homecoming dresses include Lucy in the Sky, Dillards, Princess Polly, and Windsor. There are also many dress shops in Charlottesville, including Eloise, located near the UVA campus, and Altar’d State, located at the shops at Stonefield. In Richmond, girls often like to shop at Dillard’s and Macy’s, both located at the Short Pump Mall.
