The FCHS Booster Program is the magic behind the scenes, striving to financially support all Virginia High School League (VHSL) athletics and activities at the high school and middle school levels. While the Athletics Department meets the essential needs for each athletic program, the Boosters aim to meet the wants- the extras that take students’ experience to the next level. To help obtain this goal, the Boosters recently sent out an email to FCHS staff and family inviting them to support their theme of “Growing Community and Fluco Pride from the inside out.”
The Boosters program was developed in 2010 by former CHS Principal James Barlow. They have traditionally worked behind the scenes in private, but the Boosters are now turning towards community-based ideas, inspired by a group of passionate parents who stepped in to support both the Boosters and FCHS Athletic Director Scott Morris. The group is currently led by parent volunteers and Morris, who work to improve athletic departments wherever they can.
Booster membership currently includes the Booster Board (which has four members), head coaches, and a parent representative from each team and club. The Boosters’ goal is to eventually open membership to anyone who wishes to support their mission, students, teams, and clubs they represent, through a small donation to the Boosters.
The Boosters typically meet monthly, on the second Monday of each month from August through May.
“The Boosters’ goal this year is to raise awareness among coaches and the community about our mission and role as a major supporter of athletics and activities at FCHS and FMS,” said booster member Ashley Birckhead. According to Birckhead, donations and volunteer time make a huge difference for the Boosters.
“We’re so excited to have partnered with the Swim & Dive team, the Drone Club, the PTSO, and the Wrestling team. Some have already volunteered in the concession stand, while others are signed up for future dates. Their enthusiasm and support are helping us build momentum, and we’d love to see even more groups get involved! We’re also incredibly grateful for our long-standing community partner, Lake Christian Church, who consistently volunteers at every home JV football game—supporting our mission in a big way,” said Birckhead.
The Boosters’ next meeting is Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. in the FCHS Health Classroom. They have set the following themes for the home varsity football games this season:
9/5 – NEON OUT
10/3 – USA OUT
10/17 – PINK OUT
10/24 – Homecoming – FLUCO OUT
11/7 – Senior Night – BLACK OUT
