Fluvanna has produced exceptional students committing to colleges for their sports and art achievements. These students are recognized at events known as signing day, when colleges have students sign their intention to attend the school. In Fluvanna, signing day was April 16 for sports and will be May 8 for arts.
On April 16, nine athletes signed to a college, including the following:
- Ava Schwartz, Girls Lacrosse, Eastern Mennonite
- DeAndre McCloud, Football, Bridgewater College
- Andrew Williams, Boys Lacrosse, Randolph College
- Caden Harris, Baseball, University of Virginia at Wise
- Jackson Fields, Baseball, Bridgewater College
- Logan Horner, Baseball, Bluefield State
- Kirstin Fitzgerald, Softball, Morgan State
- Christian Lounsbury, Baseball, Hampden Sydney
- Joshua Greene, Wrestling, Ferrum College
The signing process for athletes depends on the college division. Division 1 and 2 schools have athletes sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI), a binding agreement where the student agrees to attend the college. These schools usually give athletic scholarships to signing students. Division 3 schools are not allowed to use NLI’s, but instead, have non-binding agreements for students to sign.
“Most (Division 3) schools recognize that this is a photo opportunity for these students, families, and the school. It is not a contract, it is just a celebration,” said FCHS Assistant Athletic Director Jason Barnett.
For students pursuing the arts, the process is similar. Students sign a formal agreement to attend a college for an arts program, with the goal of the signing to celebrate their accomplishment and acknowledge their commitment to their future arts career.
On May 8 at 2:45 p.m. in the cafeteria, three students will sign to a college for arts. They are:
- Eleanor Sam, Music
- Nona Frye, Music (pending audition)
- Abigail Shepherd, Music
