According to an Aug. 5 press release, board members of the Jefferson District agreed to raise the area’s public school ticket prices by $1. As a result, at-the-gate football tickets will now cost $10 instead of $9, while prices for JV football and all other sports will be $9 instead of $8. However, those wanting to save money can purchase tickets in advance on the ticket-buying app, GoFan, with varsity football tickets being $8, and tickets for every other sport being $7.
A number of things went into the district’s decision, including the rising expenses of organizing events such as staffing, maintenance, and security, as well as the need to adequately fund the growth and improvement of high school athletic programs.
“The board believes this small increase will help in reaching these goals without placing an excessive burden on our community,” said a Jefferson District official.
According to FCHS Athletic Director Scott Morris, the ticket fees “fund the Athletic Department and other activities which don’t make any money, and sometimes lose money in order for us to be able to function.” He noted that FCHS offers 29 athletic and competitive academic programs, all of which need funding for uniforms, equipment, supplies, facility improvement, and more, just like any other college or high school sport.
Some FCHS students have voiced their thoughts on the new prices. “It’s a great way to get more money for the football program. People are unaware of how much our program stands to gain from this $1 difference,” said sophomore football player Brody Shields.
Other students are concerned that the increase in prices may affect the turnout in the stands. “Most students are athletes, so most won’t be affected by the prices going up. However, fewer people from outside the county will come,” said junior volleyball player Molly McCall.
To promote early purchases, the Jefferson District is offering season passes and online ticket sale discounts. All home games this season are covered by a $320 family package, with extra passes available for $25. In addition, FCPS students can purchase a bundle of 10 tickets for $50 at the start of each sports season.
For those who want single game tickets, planning ahead will also get you the cheapest tickets, as buying tickets in advance will save you $2 per ticket. You can purchase advance tickets by going to https://gofan.co/app/school/VA12266
