With Halloween just over a week away, people are buying candy fast. But it’s important to buy the right candy if you don’t want to upset those serious trick-or-treaters with sub-par candy. You might even want to develop a reputation for the most unique Halloween candy on the block. While you might not have strong opinions about what deserves to fall under the “best,” “worst, and “mixed” categories for unique candies, here are my personal takes.
Black Licorice Jelly Beans – Best
This may seem like a controversial candy selection since most stores don’t even sell them year-round, but I will genuinely eat these until they stop making them. It’s an acquired taste with a unique and complex flavor. For the dedicated enjoyer like me, buying online is the most reliable way to ensure a constant supply. Hand these out at Halloween, and you’ll be remembered.
Rolos – Best
Rolos are like little gumdrops of happiness. These chocolatey, carameley treats are one of my favorite candies of all time. They are more of a middle-of-the-road option, with their rich chocolate and caramel. Unlike Reese’s or Snickers, they typically don’t rank at the top of most people’s lists, but they are a well-liked choice if you want to surprise people.
Candy Corn – Mixed
This is perhaps the most divisive Halloween candy of all time. Fans like me appreciate the nostalgia, waxy texture, and unique honey flavor, but many consider it a bottom-tier candy at best. The same thing I love–their waxiness–repulses some people. But you can’t argue with how iconic they are for the fall season.
Dots – Worst
These are more like “Nots” if you ask me. Those iconic, chewy gumdrops are one of the most polarizing Halloween treats, right alongside candy corn. While some candy enthusiasts love their fruity flavors and chewy texture, many, like myself, consider them one of the worst candies to get in a trick-or-treat bag. Still, according to a recent poll on Fluco Journalism’s Instagram account, 21% of responders chose Dots as their favorite underrated Halloween candy.
York Mint Patties/Junior Mints – Mixed
These candies are controversial because their powerful mint flavor is a “love it or hate it” experience, especially when combined with chocolate. The most common criticism is that they are made from mint toothpaste. If you have ever had mint chocolate anything, you know this propaganda is false. Still, for those who like their mint separate from their chocolate, these candies are a deal breaker.
Smarties – Mixed
A little online research showed me that surveys consistently place these simple, chalky candies on the “worst” lists. But according to a poll on Fluco Journalism’s Instagram, 23% of respondents say this is their favorite underrated candy. Personally, I find Smarties’ plain, sugary flavor is often underwhelming when compared to chocolate and more dynamic fruity candies.
Fun Dip – Worst
This sugar powder with a lickable stick offers a unique eating experience, but often ends up as a disappointment in a Halloween haul full of chocolate and chewy candy. Personally, I think it’s fun and different, but according to the poll on Fluco Journalism’s Instagram, only 8% consider this their favorite underrated candy.
