In a small town in Switzerland at sunset, church bells go off, and a mysterious fog floods the town. All citizens run to the nearest shelter every night to evade this fog, and hundreds of citizens have been caught in it. No one knows what mysteries this fog holds. By the time everyone wakes up, it’s gone.
One evening, a little girl named Lina and her mom are at the park. The church bells go off, and they run to their home across the road. Lina has always been fascinated by the fog, but not in a creeped-out way. She feels a connection to the fog and wants to explore it, but doesn’t know what lies in it.
Every night, once Lina’s parents go to bed, she sticks her hand on the window and feels the breeze of the fog through the window. Her curiosity grows more and more every night.
One night, Lina decides she wants to open the window a crack just to feel the fog. She waits for her family to fall asleep, then she opens the window. The fog immediately rushes into the house and consumes the space. Lina collapses on the floor as the fog floods the rest of the house.
The next morning, townspeople walk by the home with no idea of what happened. Lina wakes up in her living room with a literally “foggy” memory. She doesn’t know what happened the night before. Her mom wakes up, makes the family breakfast, and gets ready for the day, then opens the door to an unexpectedly endless, black void. She screams and slams the door.
The fog had brought the family into a void with presumably no escape. Lina, still with no memory, feels the same connection with the void as she does with the fog. As the family panics, Lina is calm. She sees a faint white light in the distance, flickering like an unsteady flame. Lina walks out of the house and is drawn by the light.
“LINA, COME BACK INSIDE, RIGHT NOW!” Lina’s mom yells. Lina doesn’t listen. As she’s walking, the light gets brighter and brighter. She hears faint voices in the distance. The voices are screaming and crying.
She gets to the light and sees it is a hooded man holding a candle and facing the opposite direction. She taps him on the shoulder, and he looks back at her. He has faint tears running down his face and sweat dripping down his forehead. When he sees Lina, he hugs her.
“I have been looking for you,” the man says. Lina is confused. She has never seen this man before.
“You are my daughter reincarnated. When my daughter was little, I left my family. A few years ago, my daughter passed away, and I came back here to town,” the man says. He goes on to explain that when he came back to the town, his guilt and sadness consumed it. Somehow, his guilt was manifested into the mysterious fog as he enveloped the townspeople in his own guilt.
Lina looks the man in the eyes and hugs him. As he hugs her back, the void begins to recede, and he gets the closure he needs. The void disappears, and they find themselves in the man’s house. Lina opens the door, looks at the man one more time, and leaves. She walks back home and tells her family about the man.
Her family is proud that she was able to save the town. After that night, the fog disappears, never to return.
