With the use of technology playing an ever-increasing role in schools, it has become increasingly important to have someone who can guide students and teachers through technical difficulties. So for the past three years, Kristen Davis has devoted her time to being FCHS’ on-call technology trouble-shooter.
“My first job in Fluvanna County was as a fourth-grade teacher, a role I held for three years. I then moved to the middle school, where I taught language arts for 21 years. At the start of the 2022-2023 school year, I became the high school Instructional Technology Resource Teacher,” said Davis.
One of Davis’ most important tasks is to create solutions for the daily Chromebook complications, including undetectable issues, limited accessibility, and the need for Chromebook replacements.
“I can help students troubleshoot common Chromebook issues, such as when the device won’t turn on or when it says their password has been changed. For more technical issues, I can reach out to our technology department for assistance. My main focus is teaching students how to use their Chromebook to create, organize, and enhance their learning,” she said.
Davis typically works on a manageable schedule. Her day varies based on the amount of technical issues and the help needed on that particular day. “Mornings and afternoons are usually busy, while the middle of the day is generally quieter,” she said.
Davis said that her main motivation is to create a sense of knowledge about how technology works and to provide accessibility. Everyone has a different way of learning, she says, adding that she wants each student to have the ability to do what works for them.
“I am most interested in helping students understand how Chromebooks and technology can be powerful learning tools. Since everyone learns differently, what works for one student may not work for another. There are many ways to customize a Chromebook and use accessibility tools to support more efficient and meaningful learning,” she said.
Davis encourages students who need help with their Chromebooks to visit the Student Hub and click “FCHS Student Help Ticket.” You can also frequently find Davis at the 3600 locker bay each morning and afternoon.
