Senior Katherine “Katie” Bond has held many important leadership roles in our school since she entered the high school in 2020. Bond is involved in numerous clubs, sports, and she helps plan the activities that Fluvanna County High School students get to enjoy.
When she first started high school, there were no clubs to join as they had not resumed yet after the pandemic. “I definitely wanted to have clubs, so when the opportunity arose, I joined a lot. I don’t even know how many,” said Bond. She currently attends FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), Fluco Club, BETA Club, and Yearbook Club, but her favorites are Yearbook and FBLA.
“In FBLA, we create fundraisers to raise money for our club to go to Regionals and States. Last year was my first year in the club,” said Bond. Club members competed at the regional level in hospitality and event management, where Bond and her partner, 2024 graduate Alli Ball, had to take a 100 question test in 50 minutes. The Fluco FBLA Club got first in the region.
“I was so excited that we got first because it was my first time doing it, and it gave me a confidence boost,” said Bond. After that, she and Alli advanced to States and took a test in the preliminary round. They passed and continued to the presentation round where they won third place.
Bond has been a part of the yearbook since she was a sophomore, and she became yearbook editor in her junior year. “Me and the other yearbook editor meet with [Elizabeth] Pellicane over the summer and figured out the outline of the next year’s book. I make a lot of spreadsheets and organize pages. I also run the Fluco Journalism Instagram (@flucojournalism),” explained Bond. The 2024 Fluvannual “Phases” yearbook received a First Place award from the Virginia High School League (VHSL).
“Katie is one of the most dedicated and energetic yearbook editors I’ve ever had, and also one of only a handful of students who have taken on the task of being yearbook editor two years in a row. It takes a huge amount of effort to bring a yearbook to life over 12 months or more, but she’s done a fabulous job,” said Yearbook Adviser Elizabeth Pellicane who oversees the yearbook in her Journalism classes.
A part of the field hockey team since 2021, Bond originally started on defense, but switched to offense in her sophomore year. She was the captain of the JV team her second year, and captain of the varsity team her senior year.
Not only does Bond excel in her extracurricular activities, but some say they consider her a valued friend. “Katie is someone I truly trust and can keep it real with. She is always a great person to come to when I am crashing out. I know no matter how long we don’t talk or hang out, I am confident things will never change between us,” said junior Margeaux Cantagallo, Bond’s best friend.
Bond says she has always wanted to study political science, and she wants to minor in criminology. “I know I want to go to a four-year college, but I’m debating between a couple right now. I’ve gotten about seven acceptances to various schools so far,” said Bond. She wants to work in Washington, D.C., and hopes to one day have political influence on the world.
