One new face in the 4500 hall belongs to teacher Alexander Frederick, who teaches a variety of marketing classes, ranging from introductory courses to more targeted classes like Sports Marketing.
Frederick grew up in Pennsylvania, just north of Harrisburg. He later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, to attend the University of Tennessee, where he earned a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Economics. Frederick also developed strong computer skills, having taken multiple courses on computers.
Moving to Fluvanna in 2019, Frederick had little involvement with the school at first. He was initially approached and asked to coach youth football, and it was through this that Frederick became a Fluco, getting his first taste of the community and building his connections with people in the area.
Now he’s a full-fledged teacher with a goal of helping students to become successful in the rapidly changing business world. He said he tries to keep his teaching methods straightforward, placing an emphasis on independence and creativity in students’ projects.
“I do a bit of verbal lecture and one-on-one teaching, too. I like to let the students lead their projects and give them help along the way if they need it. I give them more independence than maybe some other classes do,” said Frederick.
He notes that his overall approach to teaching and his general philosophy may be a bit different from others’.
“I am very big on participation. If students give their all, good things will come out of it. That’s how I approach it. I try to balance workload and content so students keep their energy in the class.”
But above all else, Frederick enjoys having the opportunity to teach kids.
“Interaction with students is the best part of being a teacher. Seeing the positive and potential coming from these students and being able to bring that out of them is my favorite part of teaching.”
