Singing Across Europe

Singing Across Europe

Cara Wissinger, FCHS Journalist

February 24, 2014

Ah, the joys of summer: sleeping in, staying out late, and no school activities whatsoever.  Along with the typical vacations to the beach, some students travel outside of the country for their vacations, including FCHS senior Sarah Scruggs, but not for the reasons you may think.  Scruggs has been selected along with around 160 highly-qualified band and choir students from across the country to participate in a three-week tour around Europe singing and performing at some of the most famous cathedrals and concert halls in the world.  The trip is through the Sound of America, a non-profit organization, and has been going strong for 37+ years.  After Scruggs made All-State choir in 2013, Sound of America invited her to apply.  Because she qualified for All-State she did not need to send in an audition tape, she was just required to send in the applic...

John Herrick: Life on the Air

John Herrick: Life on the Air

Matthew Riley, FCHS Journalist

February 24, 2014

To those that don’t know him, senior John Herrick is regarded as a reserved soul; but those that call him “friend” know that his voice is heard around the world. In his personal time, Herrick experiments with amateur or “ham” radio.  “What really got me interested in radio was listening to the radio traffic on the bus every day,” said Herrick.  “That was in 2005, when the bus radio system came up in the local towers.” Herrick points out that many of his associates in the world of ham radio are more than 40 years his senior; but with a top-heavy age distribution a budding young operator can find mentors—or “Elmers”—in excess.  “A local guy invited me over to his ‘ham shack,’ where I first saw a ‘ham shack,’ and where I got to see a ‘network’—basically an on-the-air meeting of ham operators,” said Herrick.  Herrick considers that man, Fred Newman, his first mentor. After falling in love with radio, Herrick decided to...

Hannah Corbin, FCHS Journalist

October 29, 2013

If you asked Charles Parrish, affectionately called “Haden” by his close friends and teachers, where he saw himself in thirty or forty years, he’d say New York City— as a matter of fact, he’d single out the United Nations building. For years, Parrish has been consumed by a passion for helpin...
