Many schools offer an AP Environmental Science class, but at FCHS, Amy Richardson teaches it differently. In her “backwards classroom,” students take notes at home and do fun experiments in class. Richardson says, “Every single profession has some connection to the environment—you need environmental education.”

The fun learning environment gets students excited about new subjects. They get hands-on experience with labs, and Richardson is always there to help. “I love the environment in APES because of Mrs. Richardson and the opportunities to learn about nature,” said junior Amelia Moore.

From using popcorn to demonstrate energy transfer to playing game simulations to explain biogeochemical cycles, Mrs. Richardson’s APES class always keeps students engaged. Senior Ryan Perez says, “I like this class because it’s so interactive. The labs and games make it so fun.”
'
The class offers opportunities like volunteering at the Pleasant Grove community garden and learning how to be more environmentally conscious. As junior Marianna Dimagnaong quoted, “The Earth does not whisper its warnings in words but in the rising tides, the burning forests, and the vanishing species,” from scientist Madame Curie.
'
The workload is relaxed, and students aren’t pressured. “I believe that AP Environmental Science is a very intriguing class; the material is easy to comprehend if you just pay attention and do the work. The teacher, Mrs. Richardson, ensures that the activities and lessons are engaging,” said junior Aryann Baskfield.
