With nearly a 40-person team, girls’ lacrosse is quickly becoming one of the biggest teams at FCHS. Although it is still early in the season, the team’s outlook is promising. The girls played a scrimmage against Culpeper on March 14, with varsity winning 6-3 and JV 5-3.
“All of this work, team bonding, and diligence truly paid off and showed in our recent scrimmage last Friday against Culpeper. We got mercy-ruled by them two years ago, and even in that short amount of time, we came back and beat them with an early start and a final score of 6-3. It truly shows the impact that this close team has on each other. It feels like family, and it shows on the field,” said senior Varsity Captain Emmalyn Whyte.
Besides their daily practices, the team also puts time into bonding activities. “The coaches and captains do a wonderful job at encouraging the players to find confidence and leadership within themselves, which allows us to not only grow into great athletes, but amazing adults,” said varsity player junior Ryllen Beasley.
“My favorite part of lacrosse is the environment. We do lots of activities that help our team grow closer together. I feel so comfortable with my team, and that makes me really love the sport,” said JV player freshman Mallory Jones.
Some team members have expressed that good relationships are just as important as the hard work and effort put into the performance of the sport. “We have amazing team chemistry, and it shows on and off the field. We’re fluid and communicate well for being a new team this season. We have so many new girls and a lot of new talent that really shows when we’re playing,” said varsity player junior Molly Cook.
Along with appreciating the relationships they are making with teammates, team members say they are also hopeful for the season. “I have really high hopes that if we keep working hard and putting all of our effort into each practice and game, it’ll be a great season. I also think we have a lot of amazing new talent and young players, so there will be some fresh eyes on the field,” said Whyte.
Cook said she is also hopeful for the future. “The rest of our season is looking up, with our first game setting the tone perfectly. Last year we went 6-9, and this year we’re hoping to beat that. All of the new talent and chemistry on the field will show during the season and lead us to success.”
The girls’ next game is March 28, where they will play E.C. Glass at 6 p.m.
