As players warm up, coaches and managers ensure everything runs smoothly to guarantee every pass, dribble, and shot counts. Though game days are exciting for FCHS’ basketball team, a lot has to go on behind the scenes to prepare the team.
As game day approaches, the team prepares for what players hope will be another victory. Coach Jay’von Jackson plays a big role in organizing the team. Jackson and the other coaches plan strategies based on the other team and ensure all players know their roles.
“I tell them to focus on what they do well. Everyone has something they excel at, and sometimes doing that one thing well is enough to help the team,” said Jackson.
Managers, such as sophomore Aryana Chowdhury, help set up the court and handle all the logistics. “Each team has managers that keep track of each point, rebound, assist, foul, field goal, and field goal made,” said Chowdhury. Managers also care for the players, doing things such as filling up water bottles and washing their jerseys.
For the players, preparation is more than just physical training. Mental readiness is just as impactful. Senior Mason Kirby, a power forward, provided a more detailed explanation of what game days look like for him. “I like to pray before the games. If it’s a day when we don’t have school, I like to lift weights beforehand because it makes me feel stronger than opponents. It’s a self-confidence booster,” he said.
According to Kirby, he and his teammates incorporate rigorous practices to be prepared for their next opponent. “In practice, we go over a bunch of plays and different schemes. We match up with our opponents and the type of players they have. We practice a lot of defense and a few offensive motions,” he said.
“I love the connections you’re able to build with people, and I love how fast-paced it is. If you mess up, it doesn’t matter because you can make it up on defense or you’ll have another offensive opportunity quickly,” said Kirby.
The team has had a challenging season thus far, holding a record of 6 wins and 9 losses. However, on Jan. 21, FCHS secured a season-turning win against Charlottesville. According to Jackson, this win was crucial for the team and helped boost their confidence.
“We had the players prepare more, and held more intense and educational practices,” said Jackson.
According to Jackson, some of this season’s standout players include senior De’Andre McCloud, a power forward, who has shown remarkable improvement in his offensive skills. Junior Tyrell Ntenda, a point guard, has demonstrated strong leadership skills on and off the court. Jackson also highlighted sophomore Antwon Carter, a small forward, who has consistently racked up points for the team.
