Recently, three senior Lady Flucos signed to play Division 1 or Division 2 sports in college. Here is a review of their accomplishments.
Anna Amato
Anna Amato signed to Towson University which is a four-year public university located in Towson, Maryland. Amato is committed to two sports, track and cross country.
“I committed there for the team and coaches because they immediately made me feel like family. When I was on my visit, I felt like I was at home and it just felt really natural – like I already went there.”
There were things that were important to Amato, more than just the sports themselves. “There was an instant connection with the people and the campus. They also told me the food was really good and we’re getting an athlete-only dining hall in the athletic complex which is super exciting.” Amato said she is undecided in what she wants to major in, but knows she will find success at Towson.
Amato said she believes in enjoying one’s sports activities, despite the hard work. “If you’re not having fun, you won’t do well,” she said, noting that Towson stresses the importance of incorporating fun into a serious competitive sport.
While at FCHS, Amato has broken several school records, including ones for the outdoor 3200 meter and the indoor and outdoor 4×8. Amato also went to States for cross country this year.
Alexandra Fuller
Alexandra Fuller committed to swim Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Fuller expressed that she chose to go to Northeastern because she fell in love with the city and the school, including the opportunities there.
“The coaches and the teammates were a huge reason I decided to commit, they felt like a family to me and a group of people that I would want to spend a lot of time with,” she said.
Fuller plans on majoring in marine biology, but is undecided in her minor. One of the opportunities she is was happy about is the required co-op program which will allow her to take time off from school to participate in a job that correlates with her major so she can get field experience and see if the major is a good fit.
In Fuller’s time at Fluvanna she has won the state championship in the 100 butterfly, and took runner up in the 50 freestyle this year. In 2023 she was runner up at the state championship in 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Fuller typically swims in the 100 fly, 100 free, 50 free, and 100 back.
Fuller said she plans on using this winter swim season to prepare for her collegiate swim career. “To help me get ready for college I would like to get into lifting and managing my time wisely to be ready to balance my athletic career and academic career,” she said.
Emmalyn Whyte
Emmalyn Whyte has committed to lacrosse at Davis & Elkins University which is a four-year private university located in Elkins, West Virginia. Whyte said that the school has programs that will challenge her, which is the sole reason she committed.
“No other college college felt like home as D&E did. I immediately felt comfortable with the team, and the coaches were exactly what I was looking for,” she said.
Whyte said she plans to major in political science, and is debating between choosing either psychology or criminology for her minor.
In her time at Fluvanna, Whyte got an honorable mention in the All-Jefferson District her freshman year. Sophomore year she received the Coaches Award and 2nd team All-Jefferson District. In her junior year she was named 1st team All-Jefferson District, 2nd Team All-Jefferson Region, leading goal scorer, and received the Coaches award.
