While most of the attention from Fluco fans focuses on varsity football, the 40-athlete-strong JV team is having a solid year under a full roster of nearly a dozen coaches.
With only six games under Fluvanna’s belt, the team is already on a winning streak. Chancellor High School was one of their more recent home games, played on Sept. 11. The captains, Dedric Cooke, Carson Haney, Terrence Bledsoe, Benjamin Pace, and Dillon Meadows fondly recall this match, as the Flucos beat Chancellor 49-6.
“Some of my most memorable plays from the season so far have been beating Chancellor and scoring my first touchdown,” said sophomore wide receiver Dedric Cooke.
Fluvanna faced Buckingham on Sept. 18 in a game that lasted for hours. Fluvanna emerged victorious with a 45-0 blow-out.
“My favorite play was against Buckingham when I threw a long touchdown to Dedrick Cooke,” said sophomore quarterback Jack Pace.
As they moved into their last September game on Sept. 25, the captains remained positive.
“This upcoming game is a challenge just like the ones before, but it’s a Fluco habit to fight with everything we’ve got,” said sophomore Carson Haney.
Their positivity carried them through their match against Charlottesville High School, where Fluvanna came home victorious with a 57-6 scoreboard.
The most recent match against Albemarle High School was on Oct. 2. Albemarle schools have been competitors of Fluvanna for years, and in past seasons, Fluvanna has lost by around a 20-point difference. However, this year, the captains were feeling optimistic about the team’s performance.
“Our next game is Albemarle and it’s going to be a good game,” said Pace prior to the game. “We kind of have a rivalry with Albemarle, so it’s going tp be fun to go head to head against them,” he added. Once again, the JV Flucos prevailed, slaughtering Albemarle 49-0.
One of the main foundations to every football team’s success is good coaches and captains. The team has no shortage of advice from coaches ranging from FCHS PE teachers Jay’von Jackson and Devin Watkins, to FCHS Athletic Trainer Tyler Golden, to former Fluco football player and current FMS teacher Colby Goodson, just to name a few. Having five team captains also allows the team to have ready advice from their peers.
“I enjoy and take pride in being a captain because if anyone on this team needs anything, they can come to me and I can help in every way I can. Getting a job done is a phenomenal feeling, but getting it done as a team is twice as good,” said Captain Carson Haney.
The team will take on the Louisa Lions at home on Oct. 9.
