Fluco Sports in Review: March 21-28
Softball
The Fluvanna varsity girls’ team had a tough game on March 22 against Spotswood, losing 5-4. The Lady Flucos were winning the majority of the game until the last inning, when Spotswood scored two runs, to win by one. Meanwhile, the Fluco JV girls defeated Spotswood easily 10-3 with great performances out of everyone. “It was a good learning experience overall. It is still early in the season and we have a lot of new players as well as a new head coach, but we are hoping to improve as a team throughout the season and I can already see the progress we are making,” said Junior Tyler Haislip.
The Lady Flucos didn’t have it any easier later in the week as they faced powerhouse Turner Ashby on March 24. Although they lost to them by a painful 18-0, it wasn’t as big as a disappointment as their match with Turner Ashby the previous week when the Flucos lost 25-0. “It’s good to see that we have already improved in one week, making a difference of 7 runs. But we are not yet satisfied; we are still trying to get better every day,” said Sophomore Mariah Tawney.
As for JV, they also lost to Turner Ashby, but by a slightly better score, losing 17-6. Both teams have a week to recover and are hoping to bounce back facing Western on March 31.
Tennis
The Fluvanna boys’ tennis team started the season off on March 22 facing a very solid Spotswood team which is one of the top teams in the conference. The Flucos lost their match to Spotswood 9-0 but still kept it competitive. “We are still in the beginning of our season and so we haven’t had many practices yet, but once we get more repetition and get going this could become a successful year for individuals and the team overall,” said Junior Nikola Bajs.
The Flucos’ schedule didn’t get any easier as they faced Monticello on March 24, losing 9-0 again. They would have back to back games, playing against Louisa the next day. Unfortunately, the Flucos lost in a hard match 5-4, but will be looking to bounce back March 29 at home against Charlottesville.
Girls’ tennis
The Fluvanna girls’ tennis team would find themselves in the same position as the boys team, having a very difficult start to the season. It was a little more tough on the girls after having four seniors leave last year and four girls in their first season playing ever on the team. They lost against Spotswood 9-0 on March 22 and found the same result on March 24 against Monticello. “Even though we lost the matches it was a great experience to me and for the team. t was definitely a learning experience and hopefully, we can overcome these losses,” said Junior Ema Graham.
The day after their match against Monticello they took on Louisa. The Flucos had defeated the Lions the previous year, but lost this time, 9-0. According to Coach Feda Morton, the best singles match of the day was played by Freshman Adora Gamage, who lost 5-8, but has won the most Lady Flucos matches so far this season. “We’re staying playing very competitively and learning. I think once we all get used to it we’re going to be a bigger threat to other teams,” said Graham. They will be traveling on March 29 to face Charlottesville.
Boys’ Soccer
The Fluvanna varsity boys’ soccer team has had a rough start to the season, losing their home opener on March 22 against Spotswood by a score of 4-1. “We started the game off very poorly, losing 2-0 at halftime. We came out in the 2nd half focused on scoring a goal to make it 2-1, but we just couldn’t get anything going afterwards,” said Junior Matt Rafaly. The Flucos bounced back going up against Louisa on March 25, where they came out with a 4-0 win, thanks to goals by Matt Rafaly, Carter Albaugh, Chris Dean, and Leo Ceja. “I was surprised that we didn’t score more goals because we totally could have,” said Dean. “Our strength is in when we connect our passes and work it up the field instead of playing the ball over the top.”
Senior Gavin Patrick feels that the team is still looking for things to click. “Right now, our struggle is trying to find that go-to person that will score goals for us…we’re not exactly sure who it is going to be for us this year yet,” said The Flucos will have a few days to prepare against a very experienced and tough Western Albemarle team.
Meanwhile, the JV boys had two close matches last week, beating Spotswood 1-0 on March 22, and following it up with a win against Louisa on March 25. Both teams will be traveling to Western Albemarle on March 31.
Girls’ Soccer
While they hoped for a different result from their first game against Spotswood which ended in a 1-1 tie, the Lady Flucos had the same result when they met Spotswood again on March 22. Unfortunately, this tie game was harder to take as it resulted in the loss of key player Lindsay Price, a junior who suffered a leg injury in the game and appears to be out for the season. “We had already been without Maddie Messier and now with losing Lindsay [Price] more people are going to have to step it up,” said Senior Captain Lexi Demers.
After the injury, Coach Kristin Davis decided to pull up two impressive JV players, Freshman Maddie Nazar and Sophomore Libbey Hartung. The team as a whole stepped up to meet the challenge in their next game, defeating Louisa 2-0 on March 25. “Although we beat Louisa 2-0, there were still mistakes we made during the game and we’re going to work on fixing those mistakes for the upcoming game against Western”, said Demers. They will host last year’s conference champions, Western Albemarle, on March 31.
Baseball
Fluvanna baseball took a hard hit on March 22 when they faced Spotswood in a home game. Despite a good start in the early game, the Flucos were ultimately unable to secure the win, and ended up suffering a hard loss of 14-2. “We just weren’t feeling it and we weren’t focused when we played Spotswood,” said Junior Charlie Searcy, adding “we weren’t in it mentally.” Senior Tre Bright also noted some issues. “We scored some runs and got back in, but in the second inning we just kept making errors,” Bright said. Both Searcy and Bright hoped that their team would be more focused in the next game against Turner Ashby. However, that game didn’t end on much of a high note, either.
Fluvanna fell to Turner Ashby 8-0 on March 24 with junior Craig Russo, in particular, reportedly doing well. Searcy said that he feels that his team could still pull through this season. “I enjoy being a part of the team,” he said. The Flucos will face Western Albemarle away on March 31.
Track
The Fluco track team had their first meet on March 23, hosted by William Monroe. The Flucos faced off against five other teams, including James Monroe, Culpeper, Albemarle, and Waynesboro. The Flucos managed to reportedly win by a good margin. “No one really did their best, because it was the first meet of the season,” said Sophomore Haley Kennedy. Despite this, Junior Alex Daniels took first place in the long jump and triple jump, securing a solid win for the Flucos. “Outdoor is a lot more competitive than indoor,” Kennedy noted. She feels that the team is good this year, and has potential to conquer the competition. “We have good sprinters and good distance runners. A lot more boys this year, too,” she said. The next meet is away at Waynesboro on March 30.
