Football

The Fluvanna County High School varsity football team suffered a disappointing defeat at home against Powhatan High School on Oct. 30. The Flucos fought hard, but couldn’t manage to catch up to the visiting team, leading to a final score of 63-13. It was a hard loss for the team, which has struggled all season, dashing their hopes for making it to the playoffs. With the football season approaching its end, the Flucos are left with only one final game to play, against Orange on Nov. 6.

“Coming off a disappointing loss, we have a lot of work to do to prepare for this last game against Orange,” said junior Jake Morris. “It’s Senior night and we would all like to send our seniors off their last game with a win,” he said. Junior Jordan Melton had this to say about what the team has to focus on for their last game:  “We need more enthusiasm and energy on the field. Our team needs to come together and, we need the dedication from the whole team, not only select players.” He added, “We would appreciate the support of as many people as possible for our last game of the season, and for our seniors finishing out their run.”

Competition Cheer

The Lady Flucos competition cheer team packed up all their pep and spirit for the Regionals competition at Lord Botetourt High School on Oct. 31. The girls cheered against nine other cheer teams at the competition, and while they ultimately fell short of placing within the top five, the team was  in high spirits. “It was a great experience to go to Regionals. We did good and all had a great time,” said junior Lindsey Price. “I can’t be upset that we placed under a lot of the other teams– they were all really good,” she added. Even though they won’t move on, the girls were proud of nailing a perfect performance, receiving zero deductions for their routine, “It was a perfect way to end our season,” said Emily Baker.

Volleyball

On Oct. 20, the Flucos had a volleyball match against Powhatan.  Their practice paid off when they had a win at that match with a score of 3-1.  On Oct. 28, Fluvanna defeated the Monticello Volleyball team, gaining another win, this time with a close score of 1-0.  Sadly, on Oct. 29, the Fluvanna Volleyball teams, both JV and Varsity, suffered a loss to the Albemarle Volleyball teams.

The Lady Flucos were hoping to also win their Nov. 2 match against Monticello, which will decide if they will end their season, or move on to Conference play. Meanwhile, the JV volleyball season is already over, with their last match against Albemarle on Oct. 29.  “The JV team had a great season and I enjoyed working with every single one of them,” said freshman Delaney Reed.

Cross Country

The Fluvanna County Cross Country teams had a meet at Pleasant Grove on Oct. 21.  The JV Cross Country team came in third, and the Varsity Cross Country team came in fourth, with Saige Haney, Kristen Cabrera, Bridget Bossong, and Andy Guess making All-District honors. On Oct. 29, they had another meet at Pleasant Grove, where the Varsity team again got fourth.  Cabrera and Haney earned all All-Conference Honors at the Conference 29 Cross Country meet. Along with Andy Guess, the two will compete in the Regional Meet in Blacksburg on Nov. 3.
