Fluco Sports in Review: October 19-23
Football
On Oct. 23 the Fluvanna County Football team battled it out with Western Albemarle. The Flucos ended up falling 14-48 to the Warriors. Despite the tough loss, the Flucos had some successes. Senior and wide receiver Jay Amos scored both touchdowns but was happy to share the limelight. “The team’s blocking is what lead to my success,” said Amos. Meanwhile, kicker Marcus Ditta scored two extra points for the Flucos. Despite the team’s less-than-stellar season record, junior Jake Morris said that team members continue to work hard day in and day out at practice. “The coaches push us every single day. On Friday nights, we play for each other and for our fans in the county,” he said, adding that “[On Oct. 30], we would love to have our fans travel to Powhatan to support us as we battle the Indians.”
Competition Cheer
The Fluvanna County High School competitive cheerleading season is underway with the Lady Flucos going into this season with a different approach than usual. In past years, the team only had a couple of weeks to perfect their routine, but this year the team had a choreographer come to the school over the summer to help the girls learn their routine, giving them plenty of time to finesse it before Districts. They were able to show off their hard work on Oct. 20, when they traveled to Charlottesville High School for the Jefferson District Competition, competing against Albemarle, Louisa, Monticello, Orange, Charlottesville and Powhatan. When the last cheerleader left the floor, the Flucos had ended up coming in second place behind Louisa.
On Oct. 24, the ladies had another shot at performing their routine at the Conference 29 Competition held at Fluvanna. Seven teams competed at the event, including Fluvanna, Monticello, Broadway, Waynesboro, Turner Ashby, Spotswood, and Fort Defiance. Each team got a chance to compete once. Then the top four teams got chosen to perform their routines again in a second round, with the top three of those teams moving on to Regionals. The Flucos were able to compete in the second round where they claimed the third place spot, enabling them to move on to the Oct. 31 regionals at Lord Botetourt.
“I was so proud of the team. No matter what happened from there… I was so honored to be a part of that team. I think that the reason we moved on was because we weren’t doing it for ourselves– we were doing it for each other,” said Fluco team member Bella O’Brien.
Volleyball
The Fluco volleyball team played well in two games last week, one which they lost and one which they won. On Oct. 20, the team played away at Western Albemarle, losing 4-1. “We really needed to work on our communication, I think that is what hurt us,” said junior Toria Belew. On Oct. 22 they played home against Orange, taking the Hornets down 3-0. “At practice we worked on our communication skills to improve for the game against Orange,” said Belew. Meanwhile, the JV got a much-appreciated win against Orange. “We did really well with being aggressive, and keeping our energy up,” said freshman Katie Thomas.
This week both JV and Varsity play away at Monticello on Oct. 27, and home against Albemarle on Oct. 29.
Cross Country
The boys’ and girls’ cross country team had their District meet home at Pleasant Grove on Oct. 21, competing against Orange, Louisa, Powhatan, Albemarle, Monticello, and Charlottesville. The boys finished in 5th place, with senior Andy Guess earning All-District Honors for placing in the top 15 overall. The girls’ team was also very successful at Districts, finishing 4th. Three of the girls finished in the top 15 overall, with Kristen Cabrera coming in 6th, Saige Haney in 10th, and Bridget Bossong in 14th. “Districts was successful for our team and we hope to do well in Conference,” said Bossong.
The Conference meet will also be held at Pleasant Grove on Oct. 28 where the team will be running against Fort Defiance, Western Albemarle, Waynesboro, Broadway, Monticello, Spotswood, and Turner Ashby.
Ace
The Scholastic Bowl, informally known as the Ace team, is thriving this year. “The team is made up of about 20 of Fluvanna’s brightest, and competes in tournaments that are similar to Jeopardy, answering questions ranging from physics to The Simpsons,” said Coach Jimmy Small. The team had a tournament on Oct. 21 at Charlottesville High School where trounced Powhatan, Orange, and Monticello, coming in first place. “Our two probably key players would have to be Harrison Lee and Dalton Shifflet,” said Small. The Ace team’s next tournament will be on Oct. 29 at Powhatan against Albemarle, Charlottesville, Western Albemarle, Monticello, and Louisa.
