Fluco Sports in Review: Oct. 27

Football

Although both the Junior Varsity and Varsity football teams have had significant struggles this year, there are still three games remaining they may allow them to end their seasons on a positive note.  After a one-day postponement, the JV team headed to Powhatan on Oct. 23 to take on the Indians.  Unfortunately, the result was a loss, as the Flucos got shut out 42-0.

As for Varsity, Oct. 24 was a mixed bag for the Flucos, as it marked both the joy of Homecoming and the challenge of taking on the powerhouse Powhatan Indians.  The Flucos’ excitement over a lively Spirit Week and Homecoming Parade was quickly dimmed by the Indians, who easily dominated the Flucos with a final score of 56-12.  But even though they’ve struggled all season, the Flucos are proud of their chemistry.

“The results haven’t exactly been what we wanted, but I think that we’ve really bonded since the season started,” said senior defensive back Tyler Hartzog.  After this week, the JV team remains winless, and the Varsity team only has one win, which was achieved against Spotsylvania.  This week, both teams will square off against the Charlottesville Black Knights.  The JV team will host them on Oct. 29, while the Varsity team will head to Charlottesville on Oct. 31.

Boys’ Cross Country

Continuing with what has been a very successful season, the boys’ cross country team looked to shine in the District round of the playoffs on Oct. 22.  For the most part, the Flucos prevailed.  The team finished in 6th place overall, with senior Travis Moe finishing individually in 5th place.  In addition, sophomore Morgan Milburn placed within the top 19.

“We’ve been doing really well lately, and I’m happy that it’s continuing when it matters most,” said Milburn.  The Conference Championship will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Girls’ Cross Country

Competing in the Jefferson District championship on Oct. 22 at Albemarle, the girls’ cross country team ran to a fourth place finish with standout performances from Kristen Cabrera and Hayley Kline, who were both All-District runners.  The girls are working hard and are determined to have a great outing at the Conference 23 tournament on Oct. 29 at John Handley High School.

“We are feeling good right now and plan to do very well at Conference so we can make it to Regionals,” said junior runner Bridget Bossong.

Volleyball

The Lady Flucos continued their dominant stretch by winning both of their matches last week and improving their record to an astonishing 18-0.  “It’s been a great season. The girls are working very hard and are achieving their goals,” said Coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett.

In the first game of the week, the team traveled to Louisa to tangle with the Lions on Oct. 21.  The girls won in powerful fashion, sweeping the Lions in three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-14.  Meanwhile, the JV Flucos also won their match at Louisa.

On Oct. 23, the Flucos took on Powhatan High School at Powhatan to match up against the Indians.  Unlike most of their matches, the Lady Flucos had to break a sweat to win the game, winning in four sets, 3-1, with scores of 23-25, 25-20, 27-25, and 25-18.  Like their Varsity sisters, the JV girls had a positive night, beating Powhatan.

With the season drawing to a close, the Volleyball team hosted their senior night on Oct. 28 as they faced the Charlottesville Black Knights. After that, the Flucos will play their final regular season game at Western Albemarle on Oct. 30.
