Boys’ Basketball Feb. 10-22

The Flucos’ long but overall, successful, season ended on Feb. 18. Their final days began on Feb. 10 when they had a hard-fought loss to Monticello in the first round of the District Tournament. Although the Flucos were up by six points with two minutes to go in the nail-biting finish, they ultimately fell, 53-50.

Their next move was to face off against Amherst in the opening round of the Conference Tournament on Feb. 18. Knowing they had to play strong to move on, the boys had their minds in the game. At half time the Flucos were tied up with Amherst but had an impressive 12-3 run over the last four minutes, leaving the score tied at 27. Coming out strong in the second half, the Flucos knocked off the boys of Amherst with a 60-46 lead, advancing them on to the Conference 23 quarter finals.

The Flucos challenged their number one competition, Charlottesville, on Feb. 20. The boys knew they had to put their full heart into the game to even have a chance of nabbing a spot at Regionals. The Flucos held on strong in the first quarter, leaving the score at 15-13. At half time the score was still an impressive 27-25 with freshman Amir Simms leading the way with ten points. Senior Goddy Flannigan started to come alive as he begin to score points left and right for the Flucos (ultimately scoring 22 points in the game) leaving them with a score of 40-37 heading into the fourth quarter. Despite fighting a very hard game, the Flucos lost 56-48, ending their hopes for Regionals.
