Boys’ and Girl’s Basketball: Feb 2-9
On Feb. 3, in front of their hometown followers, the boys’ varsity basketball team picked up a 55-43 victory in a hard-fought game over Powhatan at home. Varsity’s JV brethren also picked up the “W” against Powhatan. Varsity didn’t have the best of luck on Feb. 4, however, when they faced a tough loss against Charlottesville with a score of 65-42. “I feel like we’ve done rather well this season,” said junior guard Nafeese Sims, “[but] there’s still always room for improvement, of course.”
On Feb. 7 the Flucos brought Louisa into the FCHS gym, and scored a 74-53 win. Thanks to a very rowdy Fluco fan section (dressed in their “Lumberjack Friday” best and extremely pumped up to take on the Lions) it was an evening to remember. “It was an intense game,” said junior Julian Bonner. “It was a great team performance…just an all-around great game for everyone,” he said. The JV boys had a successful night as well, beating the Lions by well over 10 points.
With the regular season full of its ups and downs beginning to come to an end, both teams look to keep improving for the next season. “The team has done well this season, but we still have a few things we need to improve on for next season,” said head coach Munro Rateau. As of Feb. 7, varsity has a win-loss ratio of 11-10.
The varsity girls, like the guys, faced an unfortunate lesson Feb. 4 versus Charlottesville, falling 53-39. However, their sister players in JV picked up a win of 42-27, showing improvement in all areas.
“The team has been improving pretty well this season, especially in shooting areas, as the team has been making their shots and free throws more frequently,” said Coach Feda Morton. Much like the boys’ teams, both the girls’ teams won their Feb. 7 games. Varsity in particular, tamed the Louisa Lions with a score of 45-28. The teams entered the Jefferson District Finals Tournament on Feb. 10. If they win their games, they will move on to play again this week.
