FCHS’ Advanced Choir and Advanced Wind Ensemble Band have received straight “Superiors”–the highest possible score–at their district assessments. This means for the first time in several years, FCHS has been named a Blue Ribbon School by the state of Virginia, recognizing high-achieving music programs at the school. Advanced Choir is led by teacher Sara Harkrader, while Advanced Wind Ensemble Band is led by teacher Sam Campbell.
“I heard the band perform at the assessment and knew they had nailed it and gave a superior performance. I was also confident that my choir students would do very well. They take our state assessment very seriously, and there was a lot of Fluco pride on that stage,” said Harkrader.
“A superior-level performance is not possible without the effort, discipline, and hard work of the students. They have all risen to the occasion and put in countless hours so far this year, and it shows,” said Campbell.
The Blue Ribbon is awarded by the state-level music organization Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA). The Advanced Choir was graded by VMEA’s organization specializing in chorus, the Virginia Choral Directors Association (VCDA), while Advanced Wind Ensemble Band was rated by the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA).
