Every year, FCHS holds an annual day of community service called Hands on Fluvanna. Students of FCHS go out into the community to help serve the people around them. This year’s Hands on Fluvanna event will be held on Friday, March 28, and any student interested in helping is encouraged to interact with their community in engaging activities.
“Hands on Fluvanna is a day of Community Service where students from the high school go out into the community to serve,” said Student Government Association (SGA) teacher David Small, who oversees the event.
On the morning of March 28, students from SGA, various FCHS clubs, and some school sports teams will go to job sites around the county to do things ranging from raking leaves to picking up trash. For students who remain at school, there is a different activity planned for every class period, from recycling materials and making them into grocery bags, to playing games online to raise funds for the hungry.
This year’s Hands on Fluvanna has four charitable activities planned for each class period. Block 1 will be writing letters to Westminster Nursing Home, where students can send supportive letters to nursing home residents. Block 2 will be creating dog toys out of unused T-shirts, which will be donated to animals in need. Block 3 will be making tissue paper flowers, which will be sent to the Arlington Cemetery for sentimental decorations. Lastly, Block 4 will play FreeRice, an activity done every year for Hands on Fluvanna. FreeRice is a game where students can earn grains of rice by answering simple questions about math, English, or foreign languages. Private sponsors match the rice donations generated in the game, and send those funds to The World Food Programme, where the money is used to support the organization’s goal of curbing global food emergencies.
“I’m excited to help my community this year, especially because this will be my first year in SGA.” shared Junior JaKiyah Johnson.
Hands on Fluvanna teaches students the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering is an important job that requires dedication and hard work. It contributes to the health of the environment, people, and personal life skills. The experiences of volunteering can invoke personal growth, and the kindness will be repaid.
“Volunteerism helps others and also gives the volunteer a good feeling and sense of accomplishment,” said Small.
