The Glass Slipper
Fluvanna’s Fairytale
“Bippity Boppity Boo!” is an expression every little girl comes to know. They are the go-to words of Cinderella’s infamous Fairy Godmother, the loving, floating stranger who appeared out of nowhere, dressed Cinderella up, and made her dreams come true. And secretly, all those little girls wanted a “fairy godmother” of their own, but as they grew older, they realized they’d never get one—until now.
The goal of The Glass Slipper is to help girls overcome financial obstacles, specifically those related to high school dance experiences by offering clothing at a nominal price they might not have been able to get otherwise, all the while maintaining a caring and respectful environment.
Feight and her team (Angell Husted, Jamie Devore, Karen Collier, and Kamille Shifflett) took a cue from Monticello’s similar drive, Cinderella’s Closet, when planning for the event. “They [had] been thinking about it for three months [before] they decided to do it,” said Tyler Wilcher, Feight’s daughter. “And they decided to do it in March, because of Prom.” Wilcher, who is aware of the similarities between her mother’s drive and that of Cinderella’s Closet said The Glass Slipper can be considered as Fluvanna’s version of the drive, because “Monticello is kind of far for Fluvanna people to drive.”
The final event of the drive, “Dresses into Dreams,” will offer a variety of new or gently used clothing items—such as dresses (long and short), shoes, purses and jewelry— of all sizes at a reduced price. All the merchandise sold at the event was collected by charitable donation. “Dresses into Dreams” will take place at Effort Church on March 8, from 8 am to 4 pm.
If you wish to donate items to the drive take them to the following drop-off sites through Feb. 28:
-Angell’s Fitness & Dance 7 (Centre Court, Lake Monticello)
– A Cut Above and More (1445 Rio Road East, Charlottesville)
– Lauterbach Chiropractic (202 Turkeysag Trail, Palmyra)
– Merriman Insurance (6445 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Palmyra)
– Jefferson Pharmacy (94 Turkeysag Trail, Palmyra)
– Anna Murphy, State Farm (5570 Richmond Road, Troy)
While the event was created with Prom in mind, The Glass Slipper is not limited to Prom apparel. Wilcher says that The Glass Slipper will cater to more than just the dance for the time it is open. “It’s for Prom,” Wilcher said, “it [was meant] for girls to come and buy dresses for Prom. But if a girl wants to buy [for] something else, they can.”
