After a long winter break, some students were surprised to see new speed bumps and driving regulations throughout the FCHS parking lots. Some students spent their break taking Behind the Wheel classes necessary to receive a license. Others, however, were surprised to find six new speed bumps throughout the school parking lot rather than the single one next to the pedestrian crosswalk that leads out to the teacher parking lot.
According to FCHS Principal Margo Bruce, the additional speed bumps were added for safety reasons, specifically to slow down the traffic in the parking lot.
Many students report that they have indeed slowed down the traffic, but also increased wait times for leaving the school, with some reporting being stuck in traffic for almost 30 minutes. In some cases, these delays are making students late for after-school activities such as jobs, scheduled appointments, and travel sports team practices.
“I got out of the parking lot at 3:55 p.m. and was almost late to my club volleyball practice,” said junior Taylor Stringer.
“Some people go straight from school to work, and when there’s people who never let anyone go, those students end up being late for work, or have no time to get ready,” said junior Henry Jeffries.
