You may have seen students in the hallway selling cake in a cup or sweet tea between classes. These are Culinary II students Greenlee Sensabaugh, Georgia Smith, and Carly Brown, who proposed the idea of having a bake sale to Culinary teacher Chef Jonnay Grooms. While Grooms’ classes have held bake sales before, this sale will be held all school long. For the month of September the class is selling tea, lemonade, and different flavors of cake in a cup.
“Cake in a cup, I believe, was Chef Groom’s idea and it was one of the first items we ever sold, aside from the teas and lemonades,” said Sensabaugh, who is a senior.
“Currently, we’re only doing the cinnamon crunch cake cups, but there will be more flavors in the future that we’ve already got in planning,” said Sensabaugh.
You can find Culinary carts selling these concessions on the first, second, and third floor hallways in between class blocks. Students must pay with cash. Money raised by the bake sale goes to FCHS’s Culinary Arts Department to fund cooking labs.
“The cake tastes great, and I think it’s a great idea for classes to get practice selling in the real world, not to mention, it’s super organized,” said sophomore Cassie Davis.
Sensabaugh has been a part of FCHS’s Culinary bake sales since last year, although she has been taking Culinary classes since she was in tenth grade. Although the sales are time-consuming, she and the other organizers say they enjoy the success of their labor.
“I really love doing the bake sale. It’s hard work that lasts all day, every day, but it’s rewarding to be able to support Culinary,” she said.
