Have you been getting particularly annoying notifications on your iPhone about the new iOS 17.3 update? You’re not the only one.
Many iPhone users have been getting constant notifications regarding the iOS 17.3 update. Some find this annoying, as other iOS updates have never done this before. It’s usually only one or two notifications to remind when the update will take place and then the reminders are over. Constant pushes to download the actual update are rare.
But what’s the whole point of the update? Part of the update is adding a new form of security that could potentially keep a thief who has stolen your iPhone, or the passcode you use to unlock it, from getting into your phone or other personal information. The update will ensure that the user has to use FaceID or TouchID to open the phone, with no ability to use the password function. This is called Stolen Device Protection and it makes it a lot harder for a thief to gain access to your iPhone if it’s turned on. Another huge part of the update involves bug fixes and fixing overlapping text or duplicate messages.
While Apple claims the update is necessary, some users have have had issues with enabling the update. For example, some users got a notice saying they couldn’t download it due to insufficient space, while others say their older model phone is not even giving them the option of a software update. In such cases, restarting the phone makes no difference, leaving with such users no option to access iOI 17.3.
“I haven’t been able to update my phone at all. I don’t even have the option for it,” said FCHS sophomore Haley Starkey.
Another student was annoyed that Apple got her excited about the upload, but then didn’t follow through. “I kept getting a bunch of notifications at first, then they just randomly stopped. My option to download the update also disappeared,” said senior Jamie Rodriguez.
Some tech experts have noted that if the download is not available on your phone, just wait. The larger update, iOS 17.4, will come out some time between March 1 and March 6, and hopefully, for such users, will make the stolen device protection available for all.
