Math minds visit VMI

Are you smarter than a middle schooler? Maybe not these middle schoolers. On Nov. 18, a group of Fluvanna 6th, 7th, and 8th graders traveled to the Virginia Military Institute to participate in the American Mathematical Competition, a nationwide contest of mathematical prowess where groups of students are given 40 questions to answer in a limited amount of time. The participants had a chance to gain college scholarships.

Teachers Kenny Yowell and Laura Bridge oversaw the students as they prepared for the tests over the course of five weeks. After arriving at the university and taking the tests, the students were fed lunch and given a tour of the VMI campus. “Our students represented Fluvanna very well,” Yowell said in praise of the talented students. Below is a list of 8th grade students who participated in the competition:

Connor Bridge

Alex Pellicane

Alex Williams

Emory Davis

Jason Dech

Samantha Marlow

Caleb Kreitzer

Nick Warden

Update: 12 students attended the AMC 10/12 math competition sponsored by Mr. Yowell and Ms. Bridge, who organized the event.  The students who attended were Will Hall, Liam Bridge, Carter Hall, Amber Sigmann, and McKenzie Fain in the back row, and Taijana Simms, Autumn Sheperd, Ophelia Partee, Derek Wingland, Cyrus Conti, Lindsay Herring, and Andre-A’Bryanna Key in the front row.
