A Night at the Masquerade
Lights! Camera! Masks! With April in full swing, many students are anxiously awaiting Prom 2014, which is entitled “A Night at the Masquerade.” Members of Junior Prom Committee are working hard to provide the students of FCHS with an unforgettable night filled with sparkle, masks, and royalty.
Inspired by the idea of a 16th century royal ball mixed with a Mardi Gras-like carnival atmosphere, “Masquerade” creates a feeling of nobility. “I’ve always wanted a Masquerade-themed prom and the fact that they are doing it this year is awesome. I have high hopes for my last prom,” said senior Dalton Baughn.
The second prom hosted in the new building of the Flying Flucos will be held on April 26 from 8 pm to midnight in the cafeteria. (According to Prom Adviser Amy McCauley, Prom will not end at 11 pm—as some had thought–although students will be encouraged to start leaving around 11:30 pm, so as to be home before the county’s teen curfew.) Tickets are on sale until Friday, April 25 in the cafeteria. Senior tickets are $10, while underclassmen and approved guests pay $15.
The reasonable ticket prices have been made possible by the numerous fundraising endeavors by the junior class. “One of our most profitable fundraising efforts was selling bumper stickers. The ticket sales itself will cover the cost of the dance as well,” said junior class president Erin Edgerton. With an affordable ticket price again this year, dance-goers can breathe a sigh of relief and have a much more enjoyable time. “Compared to what other schools charge for Prom, I think the ticket prices are more than reasonable,” said Baughn.
Although it is a masquerade, and wearing a mask seems easy enough, there are certain rules in place concerning the safety and easy recognition of students’ faces on the dance floor. There cannot be strings or elastic holding the mask to the face and all masks must be on a stick. “Those masks tend to be expensive, but you can buy a cheaper mask, cut off the strings, and glue on a dowel,” said prom committee sponsor Melissa Moore.
So as nail appointments are made, tuxes reserved, and after parties are planned, the students of FCHS look forward to a royal and majestic night at the “Masquerade.” “I’m expecting this dance to be perfect. It’s my last dance before my boyfriend graduates, so it’s going to be super special for me,” said junior Kelsey Silverman.
