“One of Them Days,” a comedy/buddy flick which came out in January and is now on streaming, is the perfect movie if you want to cry, or laugh. Created by Lawrence Lamont, it is a perfect example of when everything is going absolutely wrong and seems like it’s never going to work out, yet there is that one person who sticks through it all.
We follow the two main characters, Dreux (Kiki Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) who can’t pay their rent but have the added stress of owing $5,000 to a local gang leader. One complication after another arises as the girls desperately try to raise the funds they need before it’s too late. In the midst of this, they are also dealing with the little, personal things we all face–in this case, Dreux is trying to prepare for a big interview, while Alyssa is dealing with a messy relationship.
While the movie has several conflicts in it, the point isn’t exactly to solve the conflicts. It’s more about the emotions and thoughts that are occurring during them and how the characters handle the drama thrown their way. It shows that it’s okay not to solve everything immediately, even if it seems like it’s the end of the world. Throughout the entire movie, I was silently waiting for the next ball to drop for the two characters, wondering what else could go wrong. Just when you think they can’t take any more, another bombshell and more drama drop on them.
The movie is full of action and never has a dull moment. The plot is slow at first, but it eventually begins to get crazy. SZA starts the movie off trying to seem relaxed and chill about everything that’s going on. Then…I’ll let you watch. The movie definitely fits SZA’s vibe in her music; it’s emotional and tells a story. It’s almost like SZA is playing herself, she’s navigating a toxic relationship while also dealing with personal conflicts.
If you’re ever bored sitting at home and need an action-packed movie that doesn’t shy away from deep meanings, then “One of Them Days” is the perfect movie for you. Full of emotion and chaos, it never has a boring moment, and keeps you guessing.
“One of Them Days” can be viewed on Netflix, Google Play, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime.
