A new animated series has recently captured widespread attention through TikTok. The first episode of “Win or Lose” was released on Feb. 19 and can now only be seen in full on Disney+. “Win or Lose” is a Pixar series about eight main characters, five being on a co-ed softball team called “The Pickles” and three other adults, with their interconnected stories that lead to the championship game. The creators of this series are Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates who also made a short film called “Meet the Pickles,” an inside view of their series “Win or Lose.”
The characters in “Win or Lose” are softball players Kai, Laurie, Rochelle, Ira, and Yuwen, Coach Dan, Laurie’s dad, Frank the umpire and civics teacher, and Vanessa, Rochelle’s mom. Each of them is facing their own “lose” situation that reveals who they are to the viewer. Each character’s “win” comes with a “lose” which gives a great lesson to always be prepared for better or worse. I like that factor in the show because it doesn’t just give a middle schooler’s point of view, but also the view of adults who have no shame in dealing with their own problems.
One thing I like about the show is its diversity and the many themes it exemplifies. It’s not every day there’s a Christian in an animated series, and I think that’s pretty cool to incorporate. I also like how when the “lose” situation is about to happen, it becomes a gloomy scene, and vice versa for the “win” scenes. If you enjoy cliff hangers, you’ll like “Win or Lose.” It brings something fresh to the Disney franchise.
I give this series a 4.5/5. I didn’t think I was going to like it as much as I did because I usually don’t end up liking popular shows, but I definitely overestimated this one. Usually, with new popular shows, I tend to be bored with them because they aren’t as good as people make them seem, but with “Win or Lose”, it is totally different. I would recommend this series to all ages because it is kid-friendly, but even older people can appreciate “Win or Lose.”
