The first time I watched “Waterboy,” I did not think I would be a fan. Usually, I find sports movies, football movies in particular, all practically the same. Starring Adam Sandler, “Waterboy” not only exceeded expectations but became my all-time favorite movie in the process.
The film opens up with the main character, Bobby Boucher (Sandler), acting as the waterboy for the Cougars, the local college team of the University of Louisiana. The football players bully him, and after 18 years of being the Cougar’s waterboy, he is fired by Coach Red for being “disruptive.”
After being fired, Bobby drives to the (fictional) South Central Louisiana State University (SCLSU) and approaches their football coach, Coach Klein, for the waterboy position. Klein has been the coach of the SCLSU Mud Dogs for years, but with no success, so he takes a chance by hiring Bobby. At the first practice, the football players make fun of Bobby, making him erupt with anger. The story reveals his poor temperament being the result of constant teasing and the overprotective nature of his mother. Coach Klein, however, sees Bobby’s potential talent as a linebacker due to his vicious tackling skills, and tries to convince him to play football.
The humor in this movie is unlike any other. It almost feels as if it is a parody on every other football and sports movie that many viewers originally expect it to be like. It also has an aspect of humor that is only found in Adam Sandler movies. Sandler’s creative ridiculousness makes the humor and jokes so much more unique than any other movie.
While the humor is crude at times, it is done in such a way that it is not distasteful. Instead, it adds to the overall plot and helps the movie progress. In other movies of its kind, the humor feels thrown in, but Sandler has a way of making this humor feel built into the movie rather than slapped into the script. It is a movie that has a little bit of humor for everyone. I would not be able to do it justice by explaining it, but this movie is a must-watch.
“Waterboy” is unlike any other movie of its kind. It is treated like a joke, a parody if you will, of regular sports movies with a unique form of comedy. Most sports movies feature a person attempting to stop the star player from being able to play in the game during the movie’s climax. In this movie, that person is Boucher’s mother. Rather than being serious all of the time and coming up with a logical reason for Boucher not to play football, she just says “football is the devil.”
This movie is hilarious in ways that describing it would not do it justice. I highly recommend giving this movie a watch so you can experience for yourself its humor and entertaining plot. It’s hard to hate, even if you’re not a fan of sports or sports movies. This movie is truly one of a kind, so I give it 5/5 stars.
