As the leaves begin to change and the air gets crisp, Fluvanna thrill seekers may be looking for spooky attractions and events to make their Halloween season more exciting. If you’re want something designed to scare you to the core, here’s a list of some of the best rated haunted houses in Virginia.
Red Vein Haunt
Located in Hanover County, Red Vein is a great place to get a spook. It opened in 2016 at Hanover Vegetable Farm featuring four different attractions including: Asylum, Corn, Woods and House. It has both indoor and outdoor attractions to send a tingle down your spine whether it’s a mental patient screaming at you or a scarecrow popping out of nowhere from a field of corn. Red Vein is suggested for ages 13+ with parental discretion advised.
You can choose from different types of tickets, all of which include general admission to the four attractions, as well as a fast pass, a VIP pass which includes some souvenirs, and a special “No Slaughter Night” which features a walk through the attractions with the regular lights and props but no scare actors. General admission tickets range from $20-$27 depending on the night you choose. For details, go to redveinhaunt.com.
Ashland Berry Farm
Ashland Berry Farm in Beaverdam offers seasonal attractions such as pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, fresh donuts, gift shops, and hayrides. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
But when it starts to get dim outside, things get twisted as “Terror on the Farm” comes to life to give you a good scare. Running from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays through Sundays and on select Thursday nights, this attraction includes four different houses including BoogerWoods, Clown Rehab, Phobia Manor, and Reapers Revenge 3D. Reaper’s Revenge 3D is a fan favorite because you get a pair of 3D glasses and get to experience the whole house with things popping out at you. Booger Woods combines a haunted house with a haunted hayride.
Ashland Berry Farm doesn’t have an age minimum, but leaves that up to parents. You can purchase tickets online and at the door, with general admission tickets ranging from $20-$30 (and some deal nights with cheaper rates). Details on can be found at ashlandberryfarm.com.
Amelia Frightfest
Located in central Virginia at Tom Scott Park south of Powhatan County, Amelia Frightfest is an 1/8 of a mile trail with an old school theme, but modern fright makeup and special effects. There are multiple houses and tunnels to go through and a lot of crazy lights and fog that makes the attraction terrifying. They also have an escape room to do with your friends while you wait for your slot to go through the trail (done in groups of eight).
They also offer food trucks, music, and scare actors walking around to get your adrenaline going. Tickets are $25 for most nights, with special nights like their Oct. 24 “No-Scare/Trunk or Treat Night,” and their “Hollywood Horrors Weekend” on Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The gate stops selling tickets at 11 p.m. and the trail operates until the last group finishes. For more information, click here.
Haunted Nightmares
Located in Winchester, north of Harrisonburg, Haunted Nightmares features multiple activities including escape rooms, a corn maze, a buried alive experience, moonlit hayrides, and of course, haunted houses. This place is a great kid-friendly option because on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. the actors are much less intense, so a younger audience can enjoy the haunt too. After 6 p.m. the haunts are full-on and have experienced actors who are ready to startle you. You can skip the line and buy tickets online from their website. General admission is $17 a person and they are open Thursdays through Sundays up through Oct. 31.
Spooky Acres Haunted House
This Halloween haunt at MacArthur Center Mall in Norfolk is one of Virginia’s best-rated and longest-running (30 years) haunt attractions. Family-friendly with a supervised waiting area (featuring coloring books and a TV) for kids so parents can get haunted without the kids, it is also 100% wheelchair accessible. This is a hands-on scare, with actors having permission to touch you, including getting put in a simulated electric chair. There is also an autopsy room and a corn maze.
Tickets are $20, cash only at the gate. To learn more about the attraction, go to spookyacres.com.
