Hot days are transitioning to cool ones, leaves are changing, and fall trends are taking off. Sweaters are making their way out of the closet as wearers sip warm drinks and eat treats flavored with pumpkin and cinnamon. A less obvious transition is how to make autumn-focued makeup, hair, and fashion changes in your daily lifestyle.
“Fall is a great time to try out new colors, new products, or teach yourself new techniques,” according to Nylon Fashion Magazine. A glowy summer makeup look where the skin shines in the sun and tends to look very natural can change to more of a matte, warm-toned look where the skin becomes smooth and colors seem bold.
Each season has its own color palette, and the fall traditionally consists of dark blues, brown, red, orange, mustard yellow, army green, cream, and dark purple. Updating your look using these seasonal colors can compliment your fall outfits. This year’s fall makeup trends include bold eyeshadow, pops of color, metallics, bold lips, and “latte” make up, which has a bronzed, neutral look.
Enriching the depth of the colors on the eyelid is one way to achieve a bold makeup look. Use a neutral eyeshadow color to contour and a jewel-toned color as pop in the inner corners. Jewel-toned colors such as emerald green, plum purple, and ruby red bring out almost any eye color. You can add eye shadow on the lower lash line and blend it to create a smoky look. Shimmer and sparkles on the eyelids will create an enchanting look, especially if you add a berry-colored lipstick for a great contrast.
During spring and summer, it is common to see creative pops of color on a makeup look. You can also get this “pop” look in the fall by using deeper colors to go along with the color palette. Be creative with the colors that outline the eye with these techniques: make a line curving at the top of the eyelid, add a colorful eyeliner wing, make shapes with the colors on the face, or add color to the inner corner of the eye. Using colored liquid eyeliner, colored mascara, or eyeshadows that produce a lot of pigment works very well in applying color. Beauty brands that supply products that showcase pigment and boldness include Colour Pop, Urban Decay, and Smashbox.
Don’t confusing metallic colors with chrome. Chrome is multidimensional, looking at the color one way and seeing another color as you shift your direction. Metallic is a shiny shimmer that looks like real metal, tends to have a gold or silver undertone, and can look like foil. Metallic is gives you a glitter makeup look without the glitter, and no flakes or particles that may dissolve over the course of the day and undermine your look.
Having noted that, metallic makeup is still popular and often used on runways or in photographs for its ability to give eyes an awake look and provide an accent to an outfit. Brands that supply great metallic colors include Anastasia Beverly Hills, Makeup By Mario, Urban Decay, and Revolution.
Lips get bolder in the fall as well. In summer, many people just use lip gloss and maybe a lip liner. Changing to a matte lipstick or lipgloss is one fall trend. Showcasing a bold lip color may be all you need to give yourself a new look. Red lipstick is one great fall option.
“Red is such a timeless and classic color that can also double as a bold statement,” notes Kelly Snider Magazine.
If you do go with a bold lip look, consider using a more muted eyeshadow so your overall look does not overpower and appear too bold. For example, complimenting the lipstick color with a light brown eyeshadow can work very well.
Latte makeup is big this fall. “Latte makeup is just that: makeup that focuses solely on shades of brown and nudes,” says makeup artist Kate Mellinger in this interview with Vogue. Any shade of skin color can participate in this trend. Latte makeup products include a skin tint to show the natural skin texture, but provide little coverage.
One option is to use cream bronzer to warm up the face and provide a chiseled, natural look. Concealer can also be used to highlight areas for a natural glow. Use a powder bronzer on top to seal in the warmth.
Brands that supply a natural skin tint include ILA, Rare Beauty, Kosas, and Milk. Brands that offer a natural creamy bronzer are Nars, E.L.F., Charlotte Tilbury, and Makeup By Mario. If you’re looking for a natural concealer look to brands Kosas, Rare Beauty, and Fit Glow Beauty. Some of the most popular powder bronzers are sold by Mac, Haus Labs by Lady Gaga, Glossier, and Charlotte Tilbury.
Fall make up trends are not for everyone, but if you’re want to experiment with a new look, trying them and seeing what works for you can be fun and rewarding.
