Undertale Transcends Everything We Know About Video Games
Undertale is one of those games that’s incredibly difficult to review. Many popular game reviewers have been hesitant to write up a couple of paragraphs for this masterpiece. Why? Because Undertale is one of those games that’s best experienced blind. The less you know about the game, the better experience you will have. The internet itself has been going absolutely crazy over the game. The fandom has been determined to create fan art, remixes of songs, and theories based on Undertale.
The man responsible for creating Undertale is 24-year-old Toby Fox who is best known for his musical contribution to the classic Earthbound and the popular webcomic Homestuck. Fox has said in interviews that, with the exception of some artwork, he created Undertale by himself. The project took nearly three years to complete and was released on September 15, 2015.
Undertale is extremely deceptive. The combat system and art looks simple, some of the characters can seem unremarkable at first glance, and it gives the outward appearance of a generic role playing game (RPG). However, upon closer examination, players find that this game transcends everything they know about RPGs. It takes concepts and staples from most games and turns them on their heads. The combat system becomes difficult to keep up with as you face harder bosses. The characters become deeper and complex as you get to know them.
As I said before, Undertale is best experienced blind. However, I will try to give an incredibly vague overview of the general story. Years ago, monsters and humans lived in harmony. For reasons unknown, the two races fell into war between each other. Rising victorious, the humans used a spell to trap the monsters underground. Players take on the role of a young child who, while exploring a mysterious mountain, fell into a hole. You awake to find yourself underground where the monsters reside, and must find your way out of the underground world. Beyond that, I would be taking away the experience of Undertale if I shared anymore. So I will leave the story review there and say that the story is complex, original, and heartbreaking.
The soundtrack is nothing to laugh at either. It starts out by using simple, relaxing music. As the game progresses, the music becomes more complicated. One of the most iconic bosses (who I won’t name due to spoilers) from Undertale uses a new version of Megalovania. Previous iterations of this song were used in Earthbound and Homestuck. The music is perfect and each song is used exactly where it needs to be. Personally, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack for over a month and still haven’t gotten bored with it.
Undertale goes far beyond run of the mill games. It is a true, unique experience that cannot be simply put into words. Even if you’re not a fan of video games, I would still recommend that you give Undertale a try. If you’re a fan of complex and original stories that have set the internet on fire, then this is most definitely a story for you. I said earlier that this game was a masterpiece. That was no exaggeration. There is no other game that rivals Undertale. As of right now, Undertale is on sale and available on Steam for $7.99, but even if the game was priced at $20, I would still highly recommend it.
