Get Salon Chic at FCHS

Have you ever been sitting in class and wished you could go to the salon to get your hair or nails done? Next time, consider making an appointment with the FCHS Cosmetology and Barbering program during “Transformation Tuesdays.” You will not only find great prices and a convenient location, but you will be helping fellow Flucos who are interested in cosmetology and barbering to get real-world experience with clients.

Every Tuesday during 1st, 2nd, and 4th block, the Cosmetology room transforms into a real salon staffed by students who perform services ranging from manicures and pedicures, to hair styling. Among their new services this year are haircuts and hair coloring. (See the bottom of this article for a full list of services and prices.)

The program is run by teacher Kathryn Wilkerson, who started her own cosmetology experience in a high school class similar to the one she teaches at FCHS. Wilkerson has years of experience in both doing and teaching cosmetology, including being the Cosmetology teacher at Greene County before moving to FCHS two years ago. She currently has a total of 36 Flucos in her program.

Students who take Cosmetology and Barbering work towards attaining a license that certifies them in these professional careers,” said Wilkerson. “At the end of the second year, the students who have successfully completed the program take the Virginia State Board Exam in their field of study at a testing center in Charlottesville,” she added, noting that this certification will make it possible for most students to get a job immediately after graduating.

Students at FCHS need to take at least one year of cosmetology and barbering classes before they can start doing some of the more advanced skills, like haircuts. “My favorite part about the class is doing the clients’ hair and seeing the final product,” said Cosmetology II student Ophelia Partee. The students take pride in finishing a client and seeing all of their hard work pay off.

“The students will learn about a skill in class and then we will practice it, and once they perfect it, that is when they will be allowed to perform the task on clients,” said Wilkerson. “Mrs. Wilkerson helps each student by working with each of us individually and getting us to do a skill over and over again so we know what to do without asking for her help,” said Partee.
