This August, FCHS welcomed Kiersten Headen as the new College Advisor. College advisors are a useful resource for upperclassmen, providing guidance and information as students approach the end of high school and begin pursuing their future goals.
Headen graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with degrees in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She said she continues to aspire to work in higher education, and feels her involvement with a college access program has brought her closer to that goal by allowing her to work through the University of Virginia.
Headen’s priorities are to support juniors, and especially, seniors, in any way she can to help them achieve their goals for applying to and getting into college. There are many things Headen can assist students with. This includes assisting students as they write and edit their college essays, giving them the opportunity to meet with college representatives, and providing information about universities and opportunities for students who have specific interests.
“I help you figure out your postsecondary goals through exposure to different universities, one-on-one meetings, essay resume revision, and much more,” Headen said.
Some FCHS seniors have already noted positive experiences with Headen since her introduction.
“She is very knowledgeable in the whole admissions process, and she has kept me very informed,” said Jr. “Juan” Cazares who is graduating this year. “She is very honest, very professional, and extremely kind. I trust her a lot because she does not keep anything from you,” he added.
Headen is encouraging seniors to stay tuned for Virginia College Application Week (VCAW) which will be held Oct. 21-25. VCAW is a few days where both in and out-of-state colleges waive application fees at certain high schools. The event has been known to expand excitement for college applications throughout schools. VCAW can allow students an opportunity to gain support in the admissions process.
