Making an Impact Through Technology

March 20, 2023

Have you ever heard someone support the theory that technology is taking over the world for evil? While some people believe that technology is bad for the planet, FCHS Instructional Technology Resource Teacher Kristen Davis believes in using technology for good.

After graduating from Longwood, Davis started her teaching career as an English teacher at Fluvanna County Middle School. Even as an English teacher; however, she felt she wanted to do more involving technology, so she taught herself more about the subject with the help of EdTech classes. That led to taking over the position of the FCHS Instructional Technology Resource Teacher this school year.

Although Davis’ original job around the school was to support teachers and staff using technology, she highlighted that a part of being helpful to teachers means helping their students. “I feel as if students are willing to reach out to me and ask questions,” she stated, also mentioning that she believes being a former English teacher heightened her connections and grants students greater comfort with her as she may have taught them in the past.

Ideally, Davis’ job is to help students and teachers with technology that needs fixing. Usually, students’ Chromebooks need the most attention as they sometimes glitch due to excessive use.

Davis admitted that some days there’s not too many teachers or students who need help, and labeled those days as “hard, slow days.” As fixing Chromebooks takes up a lot of her time, when such needs are minimal, she makes work for herself and researches new websites that the school could use for their benefit.

One of the things Davis likes about being at FCHS is that she’s able to be near her husband, Math teacher Jason Davis, to whom she’s been married 26 years. Although Davis enjoys work, she steps away from technology when comfortable at home,” I like to do a variety of projects around the house or on our Jeeps. I also like to read and crochet,” said Davis.

Overall, Davis says, her initial goal is to always be helpful. ”It’s important to support people and be helpful regardless of what they need,” she said, adding “If I can help you work smarter and not harder, then I’m doing my job, even if it’s through technology.”

If you have a Chromebook issue you can contact Davis by emailing her at [email protected], or by calling her at ext. 3339.
