Varsity Football

On Sept. 29, the Flucos took on the Orange County Hornets at the R.J. Searcy Stadium. The Hornets began the game with a touchdown and fought hard to get another one. They ended the first quarter with a lead of 14-0, then started off the second quarter with another touchdown. However, the Flucos fought back, with Junior Daori Green making a 30-yard run and scoring the team’s first touchdown. They ended the first half 27-7.

In the  beginning of the second half, the Hornets come back strong and intercepted a pass, leading to another touchdown. Despite a 13-yard run by senior Ethan Graves and a 4-yard run by Green late in the game, by the end of the evening, the Hornets had beaten the Flucos 47-21.

Junior Dahris Tinsley said team members should’ve played more aggressively on the field and noted that they “plan to be more aggressive [at the] next game.” Linebacker Peyton Carbee had this to say. “The game started out tough and we were just trying to bring ourselves together to get back into the game, [but] little mistakes would get into us.” As of Oct. 6, the team’s season record is 2-3. “You can never be satisfied with the record that you’ve got. The best thing you can do is to keep improving and look forward to making it to the playoffs,” Carbee said.

JV Football

The JV football team hosted a game against Charlottesville on Oct 4. They started the game off with a rushing touchdown by sophomore Justin Sullivan and a punt return by sophomore Elijah Bullock. Throughout the game, the team maintained high enthusiasm and stayed positive. “Trevor Wade was a beast on Wednesday, especially when he sacked the quarterback. But overall, the defense played great,” said said freshman Ryan Morris. By the end of the game, coming out strong and keeping it consistent allowed them to be victorious with a score of 29-7. The JV team is now 3-0 in Districts and 4-2 overall.

Cross Country

On Sept. 30, the girls’ cross country team placed second at the VTCA invitational. The course had fewer hills than some recent courses, making it easier to run the race. The girls all worked hard and tried to beat their personal records.  Eighth grader Emily Smeds came in 2nd, Senior Saige Haney came in 13th. freshman Emily Beckman came in 14th, sophomore Hattie Lintecum was in 19th, and junior Brianna Parker was in 24th place.

Haney, who ended the race with a season best time of 20:36, said “Be positive after every race, because it will never be your last.” Lintecum, who is in her second year on the team, said that she believes the team still has a bright season ahead of them.

Although the results weren’t as positive for the boys’ team, senior Jack Rice did manage to place 20th in the race, while senior Ethan Solga placed 48th, freshman Jacob Collier placed 49th, and junior Ethan Vernatter placed 50th. Solga said that moving forward, one of his goals will be to “try to keep the same speed when going up hills.” They will have a meet on Oct. 14 at Albemarle.

Golf

On Oct. 2, the golf team traveled to Fort Defiance to play in the Regional Tournament. The course was one of the most difficult ones they’ve faced, so they had to adjust a lot during the match. Sophomore Maggie Wentz made a personal best with 97 strokes and came in 2nd in her team.

Competition Cheer

In their second competition of the season, the FCHS competition cheer team traveled to King George High School on Oct. 2 to compete against six other teams. The event was more of a dress rehearsal for the ladies so the they could receive feedback on alterations they had recently made to their routine.

According to some members of the team, they were unable to execute their routine as well as they would’ve liked since timing and stunt falls cost the team a place at the competition. However, they still appreciated the practice. “I feel hopeful going into our next competition because although it didn’t go as planned, we have the potential to do great,” said senior Frances Fulton. They hope to learn from their mistakes and use the constructive criticism from the judges to improve their routine for Districts at Powhatan on Oct. 18.

Volleyball

On Oct. 3, the volleyball teams up went against a tough competitor, Albemarle. After winning the first set 28-26, the varsity Lady Flucos fell short and lost the next two sets. But they kept fighting and won the fourth set, tying the game 2-2. However, the competitive game came to an end with Albemarle on top.  “We came out strong and lost focus, which cost us the game. We played hard, but could’ve done better to get the [win]. We’ll beat them next time, though,” said sophomore Evynne Stafford.

Meanwhile, the JV team also faced a loss to Albemarle that night by a score of 2-0. Some teammates felt they had a lower level of determination in the second set which allowed Albemarle to take over. “As a team, we definitely should’ve kept our energy up. I think that had a great impact on the outcome of the game,” said 8th grader Stephanie Foster.
