Competition Cheer

On Sept. 15, the entire cheer squad cheered the Fluco football team to victory against Madison County High School. Senior Madison Grimsley said she enjoyed the “involved crowd” and was proud to participate in the celebratory Fluco Rumble and help unite the school.

The next day, a number of the same girls, who participate on the FCHS Competition Cheer team, travelled to Brookville to compete against five schools from across Virginia. According to Sophomore flyer Amina Wilson, who is one of the team’s top tumblers, they were surprised by how tough their competition was. Still, while they did not place well, the girls agreed that the team has a strong bond this year and that they work well together. In particular, Wilson said she felt confident at the event and that the team members were pleased with how much their routine has improved.

Their next competition is Oct. 4 at Riverbend.

Cross Country

Boys’ and girls’ cross country raced in the Woodberry Forest Invitational September 16. Both the girls’ JV and Varsity teams took home second among 14 schools. Freshman Emily Smeds said she made a point of viewing the course with her own eyes, and had a good race both years she’s competed in the event.

Smeds placed fourth, while Senior Saige Haney also snagged the final spot in the top ten. Overall, the girls had six athletes in the top 35. Jack Rice was the top finisher from the boys’ team, placing 28th.

The last week was a bye week for the team so they focused on hills and finishing sprints. “The workouts were hard, but I know they’ll make me better in the run,” said Senior Camryn Frederick. Senior Ethan Solga agreed. “Although the practices were rigorous during this week of practice, I knew that it would prepare me for this weekend’s meet,” he said, referring to the Sept. 23 meet at Fork Union.

Golf

The Fluco Golf team participated in the District Tournament on Sept. 18 at Glenmore Country Club, and did well enough to advance to Regionals in early October. Sophomore Cameron Marshall said she felt they “could’ve played better as a team, but [they] are excited to go to Regionals.”

Overall, the Flucos came in with a score of 185, behind Louisa’s 166, but ahead of Waynesboro’s 217. Justin Warner shot a 41, Jack Kershner shot a 47, Ethan Yancey shot a 48, and Maggie Wentz shot a 49.

Football

The varsity football team was at home on Sept. 15 against Madison County. Madison usually has a strong football program, but according to Junior Joey Van Dyke, “[our] offense clicked really well and the defense held Madison, which kept us in the game.” The Flucos easily obtained the victory over their opponent, winning the game 28-14. The four touchdowns were scored by Junior Prophett Harris, Junior Nate Smith, and Seniors Austin Porter and Trevor O’Dell. “I could have thrown the ball better, but the running game picked up the slack,” said Senior Ethan Graves, who is the team’s quarterback.

Meanwhile, the JV football team faced Monticello at home on Sept. 20. Even though the Mustangs were a tough opponent, the boys were still able to come out on top. “We passed very well, never quit, played our roles, stuck together, and didn’t give up on each other,” said Sophomore Noah Farley. “We did good, but there are still a few things we need to work on,” added Sophomore Cody Fulford.

Volleyball

The Lady Flucos were at home on Sept. 21 against Orange. JV was up first, and took a quick lead against the Hornets. They took both sets 2-0, and easily kept Orange at bay. “We did not underestimate the other team and we went in with our confidence up and never let up,” said Sophomore Sarah White. Their aggressiveness and the fact that they never let their guard down was a big part of what led to their successful night.

The Varsity team took the court next, and had just as strong of a night as the JV team did. Varsity swept Orange 3-0 in sets with scores of 25-14, 25-12, and 25-7. “We passed way better than in our previous game and really came together as a team to meet our goals we made before the game,” said Sophomore Evynne Stafford. The obvious improvement from previous games, and their total domination over the Hornets, was a boost of confidence for the Lady Flucos.
