Post-Prom Week Recap

April 21, 2023

For some, Prom, and the spirit week leading up to it, is the highlight of the school year. Many students revel in buying fancy outfits, mustering up the courage to ask out their crushes, and do their best to try and make Prom the best night of their time in high school.

The spirit week set for April 11-14 was shorter than usual due to spring break being lengthened by a day. The days were “Rhyme Without a Reason” (matching outfits with a friend that rhyme) for April 11, “Anything but a Backpack” for April 12, “Color Wars” for April 13, and “Dress Like Your Type” for April 14.

Few people seemed to participate on the rhyming day, but for the second year in a row, “Anything But a Backpack” day appeared to be very popular, with many students thinking out of the box. Senior Scotty Gibson student carried his little brother on his back as his “backpack”, senior Ethan Noyes brought a full-size clothes dryer, and his sister, sophomore Autumn Noyes, brought a small, outdoor stove.

“My main problem was trying not to get coal everywhere. It bruised up my arm and it was a little hard to carry around. People kept walking into me. Why would people want to walk into someone with the big metal thing?” said Noyes.

Students’ creativity for their “backpack alternatives” proved to be a highlight of the week for many. “Seeing everyone’s creative ideas for their backpacks was a very entertaining sight to see,” said sophomore Daniel Firewicz.

“Color Wars” perhaps had the best participation of all the days. It was also the day of the Teacher-Student Basketball Game, with the teachers being the home team and students being the away team. Teachers who participated in the game included Heath Bralley, Wiley House, Chris Zema, Makeisha Chambers, and Jason Barnett. The students and teachers played hard, but in the end it was a close game with the teachers winning 52-49.

Members of the Junior Class Prom Committee spent most of Friday decorating the cafeteria to produce the “Enchanted Garden” theme, which had floral and mystical elements to it, such as an arbor or garden archway near the senior lounge.

“Planning prom was a lot more complicated than I expected it to be. It was very rewarding to see it come together from just an idea of a theme to the actual full-fledged dance. Decorating was definitely the most stressful part because it was hard to actually put the ideas we had into real life,” said Junior Prom Planning Committee Jamie Rodriguez.

While some students had complaints about the music at Prom, staff members who have experienced previous Proms say that’s not unusual. “I would say in the 15 years that I’ve taught here, I’ve never once heard students say the music at Prom was good. I’m not sure why,” said Journalism teacher Elizabeth Pellicane.
