Nursing Students Excel on State Exam

In December of 2017, Fluvanna County High School’s Nurse Aide II students took their Virginia State Board Exam, and this class had an exceptional 100% pass rate.

To be in the Nurse Aide II class, the students have to be dedicated to becoming a healthcare professional. Although Nurse Aide II is only a semester-long class, there is a lot of hard work they have to put in to get to this point. In order to get into this class, students must pass several prerequisites in previous years. Fortunately, although the students’ goals vary, there is one thing that they all have in common: they will all be healthcare professionals.

Some of these students have already been accepted into a nursing program, but for the ones who have yet to apply, this success will help them to get in. By completing the Virginia State Board Exam they have now become Certified Nurse Aides (also known as CNA’s). This signals to colleges and universities that they have already started their career path, and with all eight of them having A’s in the class, they now have college credits for it.

Upon going to college, they will now have several options. Two of which are going from being a CNA to directly becoming an RN (Registered Nurse) or becoming an OP (Outpatient Nurse) then going on to be an RN. Several of the students have chosen a different option: to enter a program at UVA to become a PCT (Patient Care Technician) or PCA (Patient Care Assistant).

Overall, passing the Virginia State Board Exam for Nursing has broadened the options for these FCHS students greatly. Their Nurse Aide II teacher, Karen Green, says that this class is a “strong foundation for students interested in working in the healthcare field,” which is fortunately exactly what they want to do. They worked really hard and their hard work and dedication has paid off.
