The Man Behind The Website
June 10, 2021
Long-time Fluco Beat Editor is finally saying good-bye to the website he has overseen the last three years. A 2021 senior, Harris will graduate June 18, along with approximately 260 Flucos.
Harris has been in Elizabeth Pellicane’s Journalism classes for the past three years where he specialized in working on the Fluco Beat, the student news site of FCHS. “I started on the Beat as a sophomore because I had an extra class slot and Journalism seemed fun. I didn’t want to work on the yearbook, so I took a position writing for the Beat. I spent that year writing articles and creative works under Blake [Berry] and Sierra [Milliman], the editors at that time,” he said.
Near the middle of the second semester, he added, “Blake started teaching me how to navigate the Fluco Beat website. Before I knew it, they were gone and I was an editor with Maddy Eubank and John Bernat for half of my junior year and, after they graduated, all of my senior year,” said Harris.
This year and for a little bit of last year before Covid shut down school, Harris has been in the head editor position for Journalism. He learned how to run the website from Berry and Milliman, which is run under Pellicane’s oversight as part of her Journalism curriculum. “My favorite part about writing for the Beat is the interaction and freedom writers get when getting information for a story. My favorite part about editing for the Fluco Beat is the satisfaction that comes with growing more comfortable in a role,” said Harris.
Harris has been a Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School student, a member of the Literary Magazine Club for the past three years, and part of a year-round swim team for the past four year and so much more. His plans after high school include going to Virginia Tech to study biology then applying to graduate programs in immunology. His long-term goal is to become a researcher.
