The Voice Behind the Music

Senior Cameron Taylor has a reputation for excelling in speech and drama. Yet many of his after-school hours actually focus on using a different aspect of his voice: his musical career.
Taylor first started writing music when he was 14-years-old. “I started trying it out, but I wasn’t very good at it,” he said. Now, at age 18, he has many singles and a first album out called Grey, which is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
Taylor focuses on rap, partly because he has always been into creating new things, and partly due to a surprising reason. “Believe it or not, I can’t sing,” he admitted, although some listeners feel he can nevertheless make a masterpiece with words. “Every word the songs say has meaning behind it,” said Taylor.
Taylor also keeps himself busy in and outside of school by participating on the Speech team, the One-Act play, and in Drama. “Trying to do after-school stuff, school, plus a job, and trying to fit in music, takes a really long time, especially when creating my album,” he said.
He said he becomes very passionate when writing his music because he feels like it’s his way of connecting with people he doesn’t know. “If I was going to do any music, I should do something that connects with me and connects with people,” he explained. While Taylor said he gets a lot of his inspiration from his life experiences, he also gets it from different artists and genres of music. “I hear something on a song and I’m like, ‘that’s really cool,’ so I start playing around with it,” he said.
Although Taylor has thought a lot about different career paths, especially as he prepares to graduate in May, he has not settled on one yet. “I definitely want to see where my music goes and where my music can take me,” said Taylor.
