The Wonder of GalaxyCon

April 19, 2022

An amazing place for nerds, weebs and movie lovers, the annual Comic Con, held alternately in San Diego or Las Vegas, is the ultimate destination. But if you want to stay in Virginia, GalaxyCon is the event to choose. It is filled with shops, games, sightings and potential visits with famous people, and more.

This year’s GalaxyCon took place March 18-20, and I was lucky enough to go. GalaxyCon features actors from the DC, Marvel, and Star Trek franchises, plus anime voice actors and actors from classic shows like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Some of the best-known people at this year’s event were William Shatner (Star Trek), Chris Sarandon (the voice of Jack Skellington from Nightmare Before Christmas), and Tara Strong (the voice of cartoon characters like Twilight Sparkle in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic).

As you walk around the weekend event, you can go to different booths to meet the actors and get their autographs, although it will cost you. Autographs range from $50 for actor Chris Sarandon to $120 for actor William Shatner.

Another reason why attending GalaxyCon is not cheap is that the basic ticket price is $55. But it is worth it since you get to see more than famous actors and buy unusual and fun merchandise and art work; you can also chat with people who have the same interests as you.

I especially enjoyed strolling around and seeing all the cosplay (people dressing up as characters they like), including some I didn’t see coming, like a robot with a metal foot. There were a lot of people dressed up as Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer and other anime characters. I took advantage of the many stalls and purchased some unique merchandise, including a fox keychain, a Studio Ghibli poster with all my favorite characters, and a fox mask.

Another highlight was getting to talk to some voice actors, including Ian Sinclair, who voices Brook in One Piece, Whis, a side character from the Dragon Ball franchise, and Jason Liebrecht who does the voices for Qrow Branwen in RWBY and Dabi in My Hero Academia. They were great people, kind, and fun to talk to.

I highly recommend you consider attending next year’s GalaxyCon when it takes place in Virginia. If you want to start planning to attend next year’s event, go to this website. https://galaxycon.com/pages/richmond
